Squeaky Steering Wheel

Happy Holidays, proud owner of a 2006 Cayenne here, my 3rd Porsche in 3 years, my wife is ready to kill me Loving this SUV, only issue is a squeak in the steering wheel when turning right or left. Sounds like metal on metal, any suggestions?

Thanks

I have not had that problem on the 955 turbo just yet and hopefully never, but did have the problem on my CL Mercedes and it was the Rack and Pinion.

But could be that or power steering pump?

Appears the squeak may be occuring during slow turns after the tires have warmed up a bit. The sound is like a wet sneaker on the floor, annoying as hell

Dealer adjusted steering column damper, did not correct the issue....next step rack and pinion replacement, good call bullonwallst!

There was a TSB (6954) for grinding which was the rubber tube on the centering pegs of the airbag contact unit, and the fix was to grease them. It did say grinding not squeeking, so I'm not sure if it's the same issue.

Quote from RFM at Renntech.org:

"Concerning steering squeaks on Cayenne:
1/ Rubber part where the steering column go's trough the car floor can produce squeaks: a treatment with silicone spray is recommended.
2/ under the car, where the steering column is connected to the steering rack sits a round plate and seal, which protect the steering pinion against dirt, water, etc. ( the steering rack is a pinion and rack system ) some of the racks have a little water infiltration and the pinion starts squealing after a year or so. The only solution against that, till now, is a steering rack replacement as your dealer suggest."

Dealer replaced the power steering rack, including the steering gear, part: 955-347-011-17 and the steering column sealing sleeve, part: 955-347-037-03
Drive is MUCH improved, nice "new car" stiffness, plus, it appears the noise is gone (fingers crossed)
