Brake pads alarm

Hello guys,

Recently at dealership, my service guy told me that I have 25% left on my pads and my rotors, and told me that I'd have to have them replaced at my next service visit. However, it's been 300 miles that I'm driving the car after his advice and I got this "Brake Pads" alarm on the dash. So, my question is, can I just replace the brake pads and keep on driving or should I really replace the rotors as well. Replacing the rotors will be costly, around $3000, whereas the pads are quite cheap. I can actually feel that the rotors are already gone by touching at the outer edge of the rotors. Tell me what to do...

You left out a key piece of information, which is how many miles do have on the car? If it's somewhere close to 30K, I'd do the rotors.

I have 19k by the way. But to be honest, I am a hardcore driver, with constant accelerations and decelerations all the time...

to be honest, I always tell customers to replace rotors at the same time they do pads, of course its not nearly as costly on everyday cars but its the right thing, otherwise you get unwanted noise or just vibration. The price you are being quoted is a bit on the high side, I would get a second estimate if possible. By the way you do not need to go to the dealer, any indy shop should be able to handle this job

Agree with above, $3000 is very high. Is that for front & back rotors & pads? Anyways, for your reference:

So parts alone is less than $500 for the front or back. I could imagine dealer charging $1200-$1500 and independent shops less than $1000.

Guys, which parts need to be changed? Front/rear rotors + front/rear pads. Do I also have to replace the pad sensors and caliper springs? What about the brake fluid?

If you have 19K most likely you wore out the front first, look inside the caliper with a flashlight you can see which is worn down the most. I have 50K miles on mine and I change the rotor every other time I do the pads. No squeel or vibration issues. Yes buy new senors each time, caliper springs aren't needed. Brake fluid flush at 36K I believe, check your manual.

Since your brake pad lights came on already, you will definitely need the sensors replaced. Brake fluid flush is every 2 years regardless of miles per Porsche. Overkill, probably in my opinion but I let the dealer do it anyway. It's only $100-$150 so in case something else more expensive fails while under warranty. They have nothing to blame... I do not know if the Cayenne requires special procedures/equipment on bleeding the brakes but some cars do. It has to do with the ABS pump valve open or close depending on the car so if you are not sure, let the dealer or someone who has experience on Cayenne do it.

You should be fine with your rotors at less you screw them with brake pads down to metal (it doesn't sound like you did that)

I just had my F&R pads done and my rotors are just fine. (15000km)
