Headunit Install

Is it possible to install a different headunit into the Cayenne? I was thinking something like the Kenwood Excelon would be a good solution. It is a double din and can play dvd's, mp3's, has navigation, and I could hook my ipod into it directly. Let me know if anybody has had any experience with this. I know the Cayenne uses the MOST bus and fiber optics. I currently have the PCM in my 04 Cayenne S. Would this be a problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Well since the Cayenne uses fiber optics you would lose your steering wheel controls, but that is about it

Correct! I tried to install an aftermarket kit to try not to lose my steering wheel control which did not work...
I am currently running an Alpine AVD-900 head unit

They told me they already make the module for the steering wheel controls, I have to verify from the guy who did my 911 stereo, cause I asked him the same thing.

Did you make a frame for the head unit since the stock one is much bigger than the alpine?

Yes I did. My stereo guy made a frame out of MDF.

There was some sort of fitment problem. The panel was made from scratch and it looked like it was the only way things could fit...

If you are going to go for a double din the escelon is a good choice but an even bettter choice for a little more money is the eclipse double din, because it has navigation included

patrick did you lose your steering wheel controls, what are your impressions of the Eclipse, is it worth it? What did you do with your stock navigation?

Adiaz,

Yes, lost the steering wheel controls. But I hear Pac Audio (www.pac-audio.com) and/or SoundGate (www.soundgate.com) are coming out with a CAN BUS adapter solution. Should have my steering wheel controls back soon!

I really like my Eclipse deck. It's very user-friendly and the video is really good (picture quality-wise). I have other screens in my car and it definitely does have the best picture.

The fact that everything is built into the H/U -- CD/DVD/MP3/NAVI (and PlayStation!) is another plus. It might even save on the install since you won't have to pay labor the other components wired and relocated. The $2K was a bit steep, but again install was pretty simple and straight forward.

I may be upgrading to the AVN5495 soon though (has the 30GB HD ). I just got a call today that they are expecting them by next week.

As for my PCM unit, I'll be storing it in the event I sell the car in the future and want to keep the Eclipse.
