Question about cooling pipes
Question about cooling pipes
when dealer replaces cooling pipes, how do you know they replace them with metal ones as opposed to the plastic ones which were prone to cracking?
At what year did dealers start using metal pipes for replacement?

that is not what I am asking. I am not asking how to check if your pipes are metal.
I am asking when the dealerships start replacing pipes with metal ones as opposed to plastic ones. was there a time when they decided to switch from plastic to metal? If yes, when. That is what I'm asking.

My bad I missed that. I believe they can still replace them with either plastic or aluminum. The plastic is different than the original.
i thought the original piping was plastic, and after getting many incidences of cracking they started replacing with aluminum (at least that is what I am assuming from reading the forums on this topic).
I was under the impression the plastic ones were original and the metal were a modification.
Anyone have historical perspective on this?

Sounds like you are phishing instead of searching on a topic that has been beat to death. Maybe someone will correct me if Im wrong.
The dealer carries an alum. UPGRADE cooling pipe set.
If you are under warranty they may or may not replace the plastic with alum, @ their discretion.
To this day Cayenne's are being manufactured with plastic cooling pipes.
There is no point in time where dealers started automaticly replacing the plastic with alum.
If you are out of warranty and you have plastic pipes you need to be pro-active and replace them, its actually quite simple and I don't think you would have any trouble. Don't forget there are two plastic tees between the block/heads and firewall that will burst as well. There is no alum. upgrade for these peices. I sourced some alum tee's myself and made the upgrade after fixing them twice in three years.

There's a post on the Cayenne forums on rennlist that shows how to visually inspect your Cayenne's engine using a flashlight and a mirror to determine if you have metal or plastic pipes.

Thanks for info mr haney. It is interesting what you say. I could have sworn I read the dealers started replacing with metal ones in more than one place.
Nah, not phishing (you know that is a computer hacking term, right lol), just searching, always searching. Thanks

I put up this post not because I want to know how to replace. My pipes have been replaced already by dealer.
I was I nterested in the detsils of when an hiw dealers decide to use slum gor replacement.

IMHO, I think most dealers do not replace these tee's. My local dealer does not even carry the tee's last time I checked.
@Ciaka, FYI I would not use Roger Beasly Porsche for anything other than common replacement parts if you need them in a hurry. They will give you a 10% discount on parts and labor if you tell them that you are a PCA member.
I had them replace my fuel pumps and they did a good job but when I had them do a wheel bearing they burned me by re-assembling it with a bad hub. I didnt figure this out until I tackled it myself the second time 30k miles later myself.

As a dealer tech that worked on a lot of Cayennes, I can tell you that the plastic pipes for 955s have not been available for a long time. If I had to guess, I'd say it was sometime in early 2008 when the aluminum pipes were released and completely superseded the plastic pipes. The large lower plastic pipe could not be replaced without removing the engine, so it was in Porsche's best interest to replace that piece with the two-piece aluminum pipe (which can be installed with the engine in). Porsche did not want to pay to remove all of these engines while the 955s were still under warranty.
It is possible, that if the lower plastic pipe cracked, some dealers may have replaced it with aluminum, and reused the upper plastic triple pipe, though Porsche's technical bulletin instructed dealers to replace both pipes with the upgraded pieces when either one was leaking.

Seems that the metal pipes is something you have to actually request, they should recommend them to you without you saying anything if they're a caring shop. Haven't seen anyone just get metal replacements off the bat
See what XR4Tim above had to say.
