finally real Offroading
finally real Offroading
After many driving courses-skip, panox, Karting , races, a trip to finnland to drive in the snow with the Porsche driving experience and years of instruction, I never really understood the offroad thing. In fact I never really understood the purpose of the differentials, locking, open, ect. In fact last year on a trip to the equinox in Vermont I signed up for the Range Rover driving school for a few hours. Great guy but in the end I realized one thing.-I had no idea what I was doing, and the course should have been given to every person who buys a rover and not for the person who wants to really understand his/her truck. In fact it was more an intro to what a truck can do with all the electronics rather then what you can do without them. And without them is the name of the game, b/C at Overland Experts you quickly learn the most important lesson within the first ten minutes _DONT LET THE WHEELS SPIN and with all electronic assist programs, the spinning of the wheel is what sets the program into play. Great for getting up your driveway in the snow, but not what is needed to climb a cliff, and yes I did say Cliff-Bruce is the real deal-I couldn’t imagine anyone in the country being better at explaining and teaching offroading. Perhaps as a result of him being a biology professor first and foremost. He teaches offroading for people who want to drive Magnolia, Iceland or wherever man hasn’t been. He is the guy that teaches the US special forces for Afghanistan, the secret service and Special Rangers as well as do all the offroad stuff for the imax films. My girlfriend and I spent two days of private one on one instruction at his 90 acre facility in CT where he tought us how to do it all. He gave us the tools to actually build upon and use-this wasn’t a wow I climbed the hill that he set up. This was about how to set up, understanding the differentials on the car as they interact with suspension, brakes ect. Getting up the hill isn’t the issue in this school, its learning to have run off (a stuff whole-when the truck can’t make it up a hill and starts to slide. The recovery was hands on –Winching (using pulleys and tree huggers, Kinetic lines, hi-low lift)
As for the Trucks –He had many –I found the defender 90 the most fun, with the Toyota Landcruiser the most capable. More to come---------overlandexperts.com
