Trade-in values

My wife's ordered '08 Cayenne S arrived at the dealership. We haven't picked it up yet, though, because the salesman and I haven't yet agreed on a trade-in value for her '04 Cayenne S.

What kind of trade-ins are people getting these days? The dealer is insisting on what he says is the Manheim auction price. He's moved up a little from there but is still way below the NADA trade-in price (which is way below the KBB trade-in price).

Is your dealer going by Manheim? NADA trade-in? Something else?

Are my expectations of NADA trade-in value off base?

I do want to trade-in; I don't want the hassle of selling myself. I have considered consignment but at this point am stuck on trade-in.

FWIW, we only got $1000 off MSRP for the new car.

Sadly, they are the only Porsche dealer in town so they have people by the short-curlies.

First off congrats on your new purchase.... your going to love it. I also just got back from finalizing the paperwork for my MY08 CTT. Back to the subject... I think they should of given you atleast 3k-5k off MSRP. My dealer gave me 5% right off the top (MSRP 105k ---->100K out the door)...I know its a new car but they can do better than 1k off... As for trade in, like any car the cayenne does depreciate and especially with the new "facelift" models out. So your best bet is to try and get a private sale or take the "hit"... good luck and congrats!

Mannheim is a live, on-site auction, with several locations around the country (Riverside, CA is the big one on the west coast). It is primarily considered a place to "dump" cars that the new car dealer who took it in trade either couldn't sell on his lot or sell to the corresponding local dealer of that marque. Cars are sold "as is". On top of that, the purchaser of the Mannheim car then has to pay for shipping it home (and implicitly, having the car shipped TO the auction to begin with), then going through the car with their safety & rehab inspection, often having to fix or upgrade some stuff.

Your Porsche dealer should be able to give you a better deal if they really want to sell you the new car. Suggest you ask them to hold the new car for a week while you see if "your wife's brother was serious" about buying your '04 CS. The dealer might sudedenly surprise you with a better number.

Not so. I've seen spirited competition among the 4 Porsche dealers in the Puget Sound.

They've had the new car for two weeks now. They've come up a little from their original low-ball trade-in offer but not much. The salesman is on honeymoon right now and we may just wait till he gets back to continue the discussion. We're in no rush.

That's good information to know about how Manheim works.

Here's how my situation worked out.

If you recall, I was stuck at dealer #1 and not happy with their prices. To their advantage, the new Cayenne had arrived and the 997 TT was built last week; whereas with dealer #2 I would have to order all over again.

After I told the salesman that I was calling dealer #2, his sales manager called me. He was much more accommodating and said he'd get back to me with a new proposal. I heard later that day from dealer #1 -- they improved their position by $4625. Hey, now we're getting somewhere.

I reached the owner of dealer #2 the next day, explained the situation to him, and he also said he'd get back to me with numbers. The following day (yesterday) he got back to me with a proposal that was $8250 better than the original deal, and $3625 better than the improved deal from dealer #1.

I gave dealer #1 a chance to match the dealer #2 prices. I figured he wouldn't go all the way since he had cars, but he did give me another $1625, or $6250 better than where he started. I agreed to the deal! I traded in both the Cayenne and Boxster today, picked up the new Cayenne, and have 30-45 days to wait for the Turbo.

All's well that ends well. Thanks to all here for the advice and encouragement. A little competition coupled with the info on the internet (including these forums), really do make a difference for the consumer. You don't have to settle for auction on trade-in or MSRP on a new car, not even on hot models like the new Cayenne and 997 Turbo.

I'm happy that dealer #1 stepped up and made it so I could buy the cars from them. And I'm happy with dealer #2 for being so easy to work with and great prices from the start.

The simple answer is $37,000 for an 04 Cayenne S with 25,000 miles.

The real answer is more complicated because the deal involved 2 trade ins and 2 new cars.

Dealer #1 matched dealer #2's trade in values. Dealer #2 was still a bit lower on the new car prices, but not enough lower to walk away from the cars (1 arrived, 1 to arrive in 30-45 days).

BTW, my wife LOVES her new Cayenne. It really does drive better than the 04. No hesitation (so far), smoother steering, better throttle response (more like my X5).
