Turbo recall

Porsche has recalled certain 2011 and 2012 model year vehicles powered by the company’s twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The recall covers the 2011-12 Panamera Turbo, 2012 Panamera Turbo S and 2012 Cayenne Turbo.

According to Porsche and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, those vehicles in question may have been equipped with defective turbine wheel. Due to a casting issue, it’s possible the turbine wheel could fracture, resulting in a decrease in engine performance.

The defect could also cause oil to be drawn into the exhaust system, resulting in smoke and the increased likelihood of a fire.

Porsche will correct the issue by installing a new turbine wheel free of charge.

No accidents or injuries have been linked to the recall. Porsche will inform owners of the recall, which covers a total of 270 vehicles, by the end of the month.

This is sounding worse and worse. So is it on all Turbos or just the Power Kit ones? Anyone know how many turbos get sold in the US roughly?

noskis is infamous around these parts
as i understood it from reading the article posted elsewhere in the forum, it's just the turbos with the optional powerkit, not the "base" turbo.

I hope so. Where did you read that?

it was from an article referenced to the detroit news...i've since read a number of other articles including the NHTSA website that don't really seem to say anything about the powerkits specifically. they all do mention the titanium cast turbine wheel, which i thought was part of the powerkit rather than the standard turbo.

i've been fairly interested in this one as my '13 model year turbo is currently on a boat on it's way (though i'm sure you're even more interested with the '12 that must have arrived not too long ago!)

I found an article indicating it is the ones with the optional turbo power kit:
