Burmester disappointment
Burmester disappointment
I am hesitant posting this because I know how highly people have spoken of the Burmester system on here. Today I listened back and forth from the BOSE (which I have a bad opinion of from hearing them in other cars) and the Burmester using a cd and I really can't hear an improvement with the Burm. I felt it lacked the low end bass that I have always enjoyed while listening to different systems for years. I tried every adjustment on both even putting the bass to max but couldn't get any deep low frequency bass happening. Oddly I felt that the BOSE had deeper bass. I also tried many radio stations and got the same results. I realize that the FM is a poor source to work with but I had to try it anyway.
Now audio purists will have a different take on this but I was really surprised at how close they sounded in comparison. Both were 2013 cayennes. I tried all the sound processing variations as well but didn't care for them either. Also felt that fading to the front speakers had more low end. I would have thought that the subs would have been comeing from the rear area.
Maybe my opinion is skewed by hearing powerful subs in different cars over the years. I hope I don't start a debate but I only give my story to suggest making this comparison yourself before making your choice if you are yet to order.

It takes a proper source to hear what the B is capable of
You should try the comparison with a DVD(Audio or Video) recorded in 5.1, and you will experience a bass so pure and powerful that will take hold of your insides while remaining
crisp and clear all the way up to 11
However, the B will not make lemonade out of lemons

Here are some DVDs( Audio)that take full advantage of it
Toots and The Maytals "In the Dark"
Buena Vista Social Club
The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East
Eagles"Hotel California"
The Band"Last Waltz"
Grateful Dead"American Beauty""Working Man's Dead"
Fleetwood Mac"Rumors"
Queen"The Game"
Laurindo Almeida&Charlie Bird"Tangos"
....
My only regret is not getting the Thermal/Noise privacy glass to have less interference from outside sounds..however,I would not get to hear that lovely growl either...

I have the Burmeister on my car and the thing that I'm not satisfied with it is that when I play songs from my iPod, it would suddenly change to a higher octave by stopping for like .5 seconds, and it would stop for like twice, for most of the time, and it will go on. Depends on the song, it might do that once every 5 songs, sometimes once every 20 songs. The song's source is from my iPod and when I listen directly from my iPod, its perfectly fine.
In all honesty,I think having a debate is a good and healthy idea..so is test driving and comparing before ordering
It can't hurt to think twice before spending on some options, cause once you go down that road...
The more we share our experiences, the better
And on that note,I happen to think the Burmester is well worth the money
True,I did have to make an extra effort to put together a collection of optimum sounding source material..but I have no regrets and consider it enhances the overall pleasure of driving my CT

Hey guys.
The salesman came out with a cd that was made to demo the Burm and it was 5.1 I just felt the bass was not there below a certain freq (which I couldn't guess like 70 HZ or something that I am used to hearing everywhere else. I guess I would say the sub bass was missing on both systems.
I agree like nova996 said that my focus was on the bass especially. Years back when listening to fancy car systems with subs, I would use the Micheal Jackson CD BAD because the bass was mixed so powerful and deep that it was exciting to me even though I was not a Michael Jackson fan.
It has the ability to make even weaker sounding systems sound a little stronger in the deep low end but not on these 2 today. I was really really surprised.
I would have liked to try the Eagles or the Queen cd that you suggested as well.
nova996- I would say the rest of the system sounded clean and balanced throughout the spectrum. But I have always had equalizers on my sound systems to tweek things to my liking which wouldn't be sonically accurate to an audio purist but made it sound better to me. I still would like a little more eq control on a system.
I feel bad talking negatively about the system. I am sure it is a well thought out clean and sonically balanced system from a measurement point of view.
I just like that deep low bass that you feel as well as hear. I think everyone agrees that trying to obtain that kind of bass in the limited areas of a car is not possible without a separate sub cabinet.

Burmester DOES produce a good low end bass ! especially with little cabin noise (while driving or setting the A/C fan high) the system compensates for this with more bass! I'm sure many have noticed this with Burmester.
I actually have the bass set at 2 out of 5. I wouldn't say it lacks the low end bass at all.

Most audiophiles that spends tens of thousands on audio system tend to focus on mid to mid-bass range. Very rarely would you see a subwoofer used in some high end vacuum tube system. Maybe this is what the B is targeting.
That makes sense Steph280
CTT-QTR- when you say that it makes me wonder if the Burm was defective that I was listening to? I have a BOSE system in my SL500 which also lacks the bass range that I hear in other car systems. Like people have said:
BOSE BLOWS and BOSE- No Highs, No Lows.

Harlequin, maybe the system is great in general but just doesn't satisfy your specific requirement
.. nothing wrong with that.. just like ladies.. we all have our perference
where as.. there's always those supermodels or actress that 95% of the general population thinks is HOT!!! but.. at times I find myself thinking "Hmm.. okay she's pretty but not THAT... HOT..." u kno? hahaha..
I wonder if there's a way to retrofit a sub into it? The Bumester system has a subwoofer right?.. i assume.. in the vehicle?... I ordered mines with it but I'm no audiophile heh.. But I'll be honest.. I am 27 (ordered it on my birthday) and am in a generation where I love the R&B, top40, mash ups, where there is.. a lot of bass involved and I hope the system satisfies my bass requirement. But don't get me wrong I'm not those kids that want my bass to be heard 4 cars away at a stoplight HAHAHAHA!!!

Before ordering the Burm, my fiancee and I spent time with both using non DVD-Audio discs and Sat Radio to compare. She is a Singer and is very sensitive to nuance. She is one of those who changes equalization from song to song, from source to source. I respect her ear.
She had nothing bad to say about the Bose.....but not much good either. I thought it was far superior to the highest end that BMW or Jag offered at least circa 2010.
She loves the Burm. She commented on the naturalness, clarity, and punch. The Bass cannot compete with car featuring a rattling rolling hip hop boom, rattle, boom.... all bass all the time sound.....but the bass has nice presence.
All that being said, after reading the glowing reviews, my 1st listen was a let down. I was just expecting More...of something.
It does come more alive with DVD-Audio but so few people listen to them that they are singularly hard to find.
Bottom line: After listening to it for 6 months, I would order it again without hesitation.

@littodevil:Witty preferences,well stated
@vitaman:Could not have said it better:naturalness(won't make lemonade out of lemons:what you put into it is what you get out of it),clarity(with a proper recording, can be turned up to 11 while remaining clear and crisp)and punch(can grab you by the boo-boo when you crank it up a bit)
I also agree on having been let down a few times, expecting more as well, even on some sub-par DVD-Audios...though I have been equally pleasantly surprised by how much 'punch' some mere CDs had(I am thinking in particular of a CD a friend brought back from India last year"Groove Tonight-ultimate rocking sounds"..wicked bass line with more than enough thumping for my delicate little heart
)
Some DVD audios don't really deserve the label, but most of them were put out by artists that cared a lot about their sound, hence their use of this esoteric medium
Btw,just listened(DVD-A) to Blondie"Heart of Glass" on one of several good sounding inexpensive compilations from Silverline-Inside the Music-Women on Top..oh my the thumping
