Rear fog lights ???
Rear fog lights ???
I have been devouring the owners manual and they talk about rear fog lights. Anyone fill me in on where they are in the rear and why we would use them? For backing up in the fog?
Yes, on the control dial for the exterior lights... normally you set it on "auto" so the headlights turn on by themselves and what not at night.. if you turn it all the way to the right clockwise you will force the headlights to stay on all the time AND.. if you pull it out one click.. you will turn on fog lights.. if you pull it on it again to the second position out.. you will turn on the rear fog lights which.. is basically a strip of red led that lights up with the same intensity as the brake lights.. it's about the length and width of the rear white led reverse lights. However normally when you step on the brakes, both upper rear tail light piece (one on rear fender, one on trunk) will light up .. with the rear fog light enabled, only the tail light piece on the rear fender will light up when you step on the brakes, not the one on the trunk as that piece will have the rear red fog led light lit up consistantly.
I assume it's so others can see the rear of your car in the fog.. kind of like how people turn on their hazards while in slow traffic with bad visibility due to weather.. snow.. fog.. heavy rain.. etc.
I was playing with the functions last week that's how I found out... Rob, I plan to make a video for you and other new owners on all the tips and tricks on your new vehicle so you don't have to dig thru your manual for these things

It's the small row of LED just under the reversing light.
TBH it's not a huge benefit. When the fog is really bad it does help people spot you from further back, but the brake lights on the Cayenne are so good it's a bit redundant.

It's designed as a passive anti accident design where the idea is to utilitize everything there is (in this aspect we're talking about visual) to preventing someone from rear ending you.
In bad weather your parking lights are usually already on and you might not be on the brakes if your crawling slowly or cruising down the freeway. The rear fog lights are designed to be on 100% the time you have it engaged and as bright as your brake lights which are brighter than your parking lights that come on.
I saw this once on a Cayenne in broad daylight and wondered what the heck is it.. I thought it was a defect but it was the same on both side.. so until I got mines I finally realized why they put it there... if you leave it on during the daytime it looks funky though lol...

You guys are great. Larry what are you doing up? Isn't late at night by you?
UKayenne it must be evening by you? 7 AMish here. Thanks for the pics.
Great explanation Larry thanks. I really like the idea of these extra lights.

HID reversing lights are a great idea. Now the Cayenne reversing camera is always exposed to the elements it gets so mucked up it's virtually unusable within 24 hours of washing the car.
Not sure about putting the car into reverse though while driving with someone close behind.

Rob.. yes it's 5am and i haven't slept yet.... I don't really have a normal sleeping schedule
.. i'm always working or doing something lol.. but good morning!
Haha.. I'm sure you read my entire post in my thread.. but I'm the worst person for anyone to ever drive behind with an HID kit installed in a crazy glaring and blinding reflective halogen housing.. a housing that wasn't designed to control the 3x light output of HID's.. because I will flick on my reverse HID and give you a taste of your own medicine
... I'm evil and a devil like that.. lol.. since I design proper HID lighting retrofits... I absolutely HATE hid kits in reflective and free form headlight housings.. especially those in trucks.. blind the crap out of everyone on the road.
On a side note.. what you really need is high powered IR led's since the rear view camera is sensitive to infrared lighting.. xD.. OH! And a mini washer jet nozzle attached to the same water supply from the rear window wiper to spray the camera when it gets dirty

A pressure-washer for the old reversing camera would be a very nice touch. It's not like I really use it that much but it'd be much more impressive when you give someone a lift if they could actually work out that the display shows what's behind.
You are amazing Larry. I had a guy driving behind me for miles at night with his brights on and I was in a rage. I was thinking the same thing about rear lighting. When you pioneer it for the Cayenne I will want to do it too.
And of course still waiting for you to turn the rear red reflectors at the bottom in to something usable like strobes!

I saw another posting reminding me that you are a retrofit HID projector expert also!
I have been trying to do that on my '99 Dodge Durango and must confess that I put HID's in the existing housings
. I think it worked out well and I never get anyone flashing me for glare but it would be nice to get projectors in there somehow.
