the NEW Cayenne requires 93 Octane gas
Hi everyone, I read that Cayenne required 93 Octane gas??? I don't have any Octane 93 gas in my area, San Francisco. Does anyone drives a cayenne without 93 octane gas? any difference? any damage this will cause? Thanks
93 is the preferred octane for the Cayenne but it runs fine on 91. There were a couple of times when I had to fill her up with 91 because of the unavailability of 93. I personally have not noticed any difference in power and/or consumption. With both octanes I can go around 400 miles on one tank if I'm behaving. The engine is able to cope with lower octane/quality gas by adjusting itself to prevent "knocking". If you search around on either this board or on Rennlist's Cayenne forum people have filled up with 87 in a pinch without any adverse effects.
Your predicament is faced by thousands of other Porsche owners here in the great state of California. Your Cayenne should run fine on 91 although you are likely losing a few bhp and perhaps a bit of MPG. No long term problems, just use high quality gas.
BTW - my Carrera S does respond well to 93 octane gas when I'm in other states. My guess is that the Cayenne would do the the same.
Be careful in your comparisons. I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong, but octane ratings across countries aren't uniform. It's my understanding that Europe uses a different methodology than the US and my guess is so does Japan.
My 997 says 93 octane only and I ran it on 91 octane for years without issues. Like the above said, California does not have anything higher than 91, unless if you go buy 100 octane racing gasoline.
However my 2012 Cayenne says 91 octane, not sure why they changed back to 93 for 2013?

Had my CD in the shop yesterday - warranty work. They gave me an Audi Q5 loaner. It was the 2.0T, and the label on the filler door says use 95 octane. Didn't know where to find 95 in Nashville - if it even exists - so I topped it up with 93. Told the dealer when I turned it back in, he wasn't too concerned.

I seem to remember that when I picked up my European Delivery Cayenne Turbo, I signed something to the effect of using nothing less than 95 European (RON) Octane and that they would test the car and if I had violated that, the cost would be $2000. It might have also had to do with leaded gas and the catalytic converter and US regulations. I didn't worry about it because I always use the highest test possible although when I saw 100 RON octane in Europe, I opted for the 98 due to cost. The gas cap shows two minimum ratings, Research Octane Number (RON) of 95 and the Anti-Knock Index (AKI) or (R+M)/2 of 91 which is the US rating.
