New Cayenne Owner - Thoughts & Questions

Long time member new 2014 Cayenne Diesel owner.

Just traded my 2013 Boxster for a Cayenne Diesel. I wanted a Porsche I could take on more trips and in general drive more. Sitting low is really rough on my back and I wasn't driving my Boxster enough so I sold it. Hard to see it go.

I've owned 3 Boxsters since 2011, I like to work on them. My first was a 2000 'S' that I almost completely replaced everything for the fun of it. Even did my IMS myself.

As for the new Cayenne I love the diesel engine, the torque is great and it still manages great gas mileage for a 4800 pound P!G. I just drove 900 miles from NC to North Country of NY and averaged 34mpg driving between 70 and 80mph the whole way.

I find it to be a 'busy' SUV and I was wonder what tire pressure folks are running on 18 inch stock Goodyear all seasons. It dosn't have air suspension. Once warmed up the pressure is 35 front 41 rear. I haven't driven a lot of SUVs this size so maybe it is normal to be 'busy'.

It does drift very slowly to the right and the dealership has adjusted the alignment and rotated the front tires and it still drifts a little. They have agreed to try a differnt set of rims and tires to see if it is a tire problem. They are taking very good care of me.

I also drive a 991 C4S and a Macan a lot. I don't recall them feeling the same.

Thank you for any thoughts or help.

Any reason why you don't want to just run the factory tire pressures? I am not sure what you mean by "busy".

Maybe I need to double check what the factory pressure is. I thought it was set to it already. By 'busy' I mean it likes to wander. Easily susceptible to undulations in the road.

Mine came with Contis with the basic rims. I would have made them stick GYs in a dark place if it came with those. I've never had a set of GYs that i liked.

I run 38 in front and 44 in back. I've gone as low as 32/36, but i find it tracks better, rides better, and handles better at higher pressures.

The funny thing is, it's suppose to ride better with lower air pressures, since it'll absorb bumps/etc better.

That's kind of subjective. To me a better ride is having a good feel for the road and knowing I'll have minimal sidewall roll over in an emergency situation.

I took mine through a day of AutoX and found that the "factory" pressure allowed a lot of rolling over onto the sidewalls. When I pumped the fronts up to 45 not only did the rollover go away, but so did the majority of the understeer. I found that pressure to be too high for normal street use in the rain/snow and ultimately found the compromise pressures I run with now.

The manual says at 68 degrees Part Load 37/42 and Full Load (37/46). Which makes sense. It's interesting the sticker on the door has the Full Load numbers with from what I can tell no reference to it being a Full Load value. Anyway I just checked mine code and it is at 32/36. It is 56 degrees out so I'll wait until later when it warms up outside and put some air in them.

When I made the trip from NC to NY last weekend I came up with a lot of stuff. I'm sure it didn't weigh > 575lb but it sure felt like the front end got lite, I was surprised because I didn't think I was 'that' loaded up. Now of course I can see I really should have been more careful and checked the air before I left NC. Not like me to be so brain dead, it always gets that way trying to get done at work before vacation.

Gnat - Looks like you run about the recommended. Looks like mine were set for a 'comfort' mode.

I'll use search and see what others have said.

I adjusted to 36/41 and it seems to be a lot better. The 32/36 that was in it was even below the 34/39 the manual recommends for Comfort pressure.

Interestingly my Tire Pressure menu doesn't have a Comfort/Standard option though it actually says Comfort is what it is set to, so now of course it says I have too much air. I remember on my 981 switching between Comfort and Standard monitoring was easy, just a few click of the menu. Strange.

Anyway I'm good to go for now.
