Cayenne exhaust tip replacement and refurbishment - DIY

My stock CTT exhaust tips have significantly degraded over the years.
I attempted to polish... but they were too degraded.

Due to this, i had a few options....
1) Buy new replacement or aftermarket
2) Refurb mine in black Plasti Dip (black rubber type spray paint) - recommended by 6speed member, Harlequin

Below will detail my DIY as it was simple, rewarding and cheap!
Pardon my dirty ride....winter sucks and i didn't have time to detail it first

Summary:
If you like chrome exhaust, the Fabspeed chrome exhaust tips are hard to beat.
Move quickly though, because Fabspeed's price has recently increased to $750 at the start of 2015.
Many vendors have inventory still priced between $333 and $350.
Luckily, I got mine closer to $315 shipped.
Thanks to Jason @ House Motorsports for the tips b4 the 2015 price jump!

If you like black tips (such as the GTS), you can spend $1000 for the OEM, or you can go the black Plasti Dip route.
This is the easiest, cheapest mod you can do....trust me
The paint cost $6 at Home Depot.

Comparing the two:
The Fabspeed is just over twice as heavy as stock. (see pics below).
Since my CTT has chrome trim, i like the chrome contrast with the tips.
However, if the trim on my CTT were in black, i would forgo the the Fabspeed tips and just go the Plasti Dip route.

Overall, i'm a huge fan of both.
Time will only tell which one stays on my ride.
I'm thinking Fabspeed though...

New Fabspeed exhaust tips in chrome

Old stock tips on passenger side....notice the faded color around the tip edges.

Drivers side stock exhaust tips

Misleading picture since the stock tips are dirty but man....the Fabspeed tips look amazing!!!

Exhaust tips removed awaiting new ones...
Again, it would have been a lot easier to do this in the summer

New tips installed

Driver's side Fabspeed tips freshly installed

Passenger's side Fabspeed tips freshly installed

Fabpseed tips installed...different view

Tools needed to swap out exhaust tips. It would have been much easier in summer

External torx (#12) needed for the exhaust bolts

Recommend glove use as the Plasti Dip is a pain to get off your hands.
Advice is to go slow and use many coats. Don't try to over spray. That leads to runs as you can see above

Plasti Dip

Approximately one can worth which was about 7 coats. Done...

Fabspeed exhaust tip weighs just over 2lbs

Stock exhaust tip weighs just shy of 1lb

By the way, if you try either (Fabspeed) or the Plasti Dip option...
Drop me a note here and let me know what you think.

I don't mind...
They are Victor Zehn's 20 x 10" in matte black.
This is my dedicated winter set running Bridgestone Blizzaks (275/45 R20) DM-V1.
I'm on my 4th winter with this setup (2nd set of Blizzaks).

Hope this helps.

Thanks, they are my favorite wheels but are mega expensive in the UK, I wanted them in 22" but was nervous about paying so much and having cracking / damage issues due to weight of the Cayenne and the skinny tyres.

How are they quality wise?

Thanks

No problems at all.
The only quality issues came as a result of me....minor curb rash my first year
A black permanent marker works well to cover up the pain.
Since they are my winter set, i do not plan to resurface since it seems too minor.
Otherwise, quality appears very good after nearly 4 winters with the same set.

Do you know where they are manufactured and if they have suitable load ratings for a Cayenne?

Not sure where production is located...
However, Victor Equipment manufactures wheels exclusively for Porsche aftermarket.

See specs below, including load rating below...

Thanks, love these but best deals in the US wont ship to the UK

Will keep looking.

I just bought some sport design style square exhaust tips from a Chinese eBay seller, they should be here on Wednesday so will write up on quality and fitment to my diesel once I get them on.

Excellent DIY and love the pictures showing the snow on the ground - we don't get much of that at all in Los Angeles haha!

Thanks for the support, definitely following this build closely

Greatly appreciate all the pms, emails and phone calls Jason!
You've been extremely helpful discussing exhaust items, IPD Plenum, GIAC, etc.
I'm looking forward to the next round of mods...

How tough was it to remove the original tips, were the clamps hard to remove or straight forward? My tips should be here tomorrow so plan to install at the weekend, weather permitting?

I had the guys at Fabspeed do black powder coat on their tips. Installed with a quarter-turn so they line up w/the bumper.

Quite manly methinks.

Love it! Looks great on your Turbo.
I didn't know that was an option that Fabspeed would do.
Thanks for sharing.
