Sell Me on the Cayenne!

Folks,

Would love to get your perspective.

A bit of background...
First off, I'm a big Porsche guy among other cars. Currently have a highly modded 997TT, owned an incredible 993 and several 951, 968 etc.

Right now flanking the 997TT we have a Wrangler Unlimited and E350 Bluetec for business. Generally I have been against SAV (Sport Activity Vehicles) as they don't offer the utility of a real SUV and will never be as sporty as a sportscar like 911. So usually I have try to keep in the fleet:

1 SUV
1 lux sedan
1 hardcore toy

Situation
Wife is 3 months pregnant. The Jeep is a 4 door so that's no problem. But our plan was to lift it some, put some nice tires on it etc. A Jeep is no where near as cool kept stock!

Jeep:
Good things about the Jeep
1) family convertible
2) lots of rugged character. Especially lifted with wheels; not same as every other enclosed SAV
3) fun off road

Bad things: 1) will be higher for her to get in an out of; but she can use the E when if she really needs to 2) no 3rd row if we want to take more people

Cayenne
Good things about Cayenne GTS
1) It's a Porsche! Fun to drive, power, steering, exhaust sound etc. so not only will wife have fun but I could see myself putting her more in Bluetec while I daily drive the Cayenne!
2) It will be lower - but this is kind a negative as the wife thinks most SAV's are TOO low. Something like a GL550 to her is high but with steps etc
3) I assume it will be safer than a Wrangler - but more than a GL550?
4) More luxurious than a Wrangler - but not more than a GL550 is it?

Bad things about Cayenne
1) very little cargo space - esp compared to GL
2) no 3rd row

What do you guys think? With another Porsche in the house and a quality German sedan would you keep the rugged playful Jeep? How did you justify the Caynenne over SUV's with backseat - I don't like the idea of paying $80k for an SUV (Rover or Cayenne) and I cannot take more people!

What say ye?

Wow 196 views and no feedback. Sure hope that isn't indicative of buyers remorse ;-)

Here's another perspective: Your new child (and maybe more thereafter?) WILL put out every possible bodily fluid inside your new $80K+ car/suv. If money is no object then get it. However, if it will bother you even a little bit when the baby pukes inside your car then get a Jeep grand cherokee or Acura MDX (3rd row too).

By the way, keep the jeep

Depends on the kid, but you of course can't predict that so your advice does have some merit. Mine is 3 now and hasn't had such incidents. We also only give him water in the car so on the rare occasions drink has been spilled, it's no issue either.

The one thing I would suggest is to get the leather option that gets rid of the stupid holes in the seat centers (they seem to change the name constantly so I don't know the current iteration). I forgot Porsche does that stupid perforated leather until it was too late and I'm kinda pissed about that. Those holes attract all kinds of crap.

i have gts and love it. air suspension brings her back up to a good height when you want it. i keep her low mostly.

as for seats (i have 6 month old) i went with no holes alcatara and bought a seat cover (nice one that goes under the car seat) to protect things a bit. that said its always a risk but that's what a detail shop is for if thing go bad.

and i am not throwing a sippy filled with apple juice or a bag of cheerios back there when it comes time. i will happily pull over for 10 minutes and stretch my legs while my son snacks.

oh and not 80k anymore. 2015/16 base is ~93K and will basic options you are around 110/115K. Not sure if that changes things.

Honestly, in my view, the Cayenne is one of the world's perfect compromise vehicles. If you can only have one car, it's one of the choices that is a lot of fun to drive, super nice to be inside of, you can carry your people around in it, it has enough cargo room to provide some utility, and it has the brand cachet. That is what makes it as popular and successful for Porsche as it has been.

For a person who has the means to drive a 997 in one space and also have, say, a Grand Cherokee or even a Tahoe or a Sequoia or something in the other space - well, that might be even better.

imo, the 958's interior is better than any Mercedes interior, with the exception of the S class. on all the current model porsches, its night and day difference in interiors compared to the older cars. the GL trunk/cargo space is very small with the 3rd row installed and like all SUV's with a third row, only children or really short people can sit back there. the cayenne drives much better than a GL. has many different ride heights to choose from on cars with a/s. last, the cayenne isn't made in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. that can be a good or bad thing, depending on how you look at it.

All great points. Regarding price, no I would not spend any where near $100k on the mommy-mobile. The point about having a 997TT and a Tahoe or Grand Cherokee sounds like your point is that there are suv's with more utility out there and of course I can get my driving kicks in the 997.

That is why I wondered about getting the G. Or, if I want cachet but don't care about the drive I suppose a G-Wagon could be interesting LOL. Seriously, did any of you look t Q7? It is based on Cayenne but has more space correct?

the G wagon drives really bad dynamically and in comfort (for a luxury car). if you've never been inside one, its also quite cramped inside the cockpit/cabin for such a large vehicle. the g wagon is probably one of the most capable off roaders, but nobody really takes them off road. other than the presence and bling factor the G has, its not really a good car to dd or drive in general. it also drinks gas like we need to breathe air. a new q7 is due out very shortly and will be on an all new mlb platform, which they Bentley bentayaga and the next gen cayenne will share. there is a third row in the q7's, but the current model is very dated and id wait for the new model.

+1.. also, if you have a 997TT, spring for the Turbo over the GTS. You wont regret it.

I saw the new Q7 last week in the Grand Canyon. Think station wagon vs SUV

Go for it..

Over the years I've had a 944 Turbo, a 350Z, an SLK350, an Audi TT (225), an E36 M3, a 997.1 C2S, a 997.2 C4S Cab - and I don't know whether I'm getting old but my Cayenne Diesel is THE BEST car I have ever had.

Ever.

our best car ever too. My wife mainly drives it but I use it to tow the racecar.

Since we got it 27 months ago, we put 46000 miles on it and only 5000 on her Z4.

Why do you want a 3rd row? You only have 1 kid coming, right? There is plenty of room in the 958
