running board diy
just installed running boards on my v6. needed to put back my all season/winter setup anyway. simple enough one person job in an afternoon. no special tools needed. just some t10, t20 torx and 10 and 12mm wrench. here are the steps:
1)jack up car, remove wheels and then remove wheel lining.
this is just for one front wheel liner
2)remove wheel arches. once you have the back exposed, you can see where the screws are. there are only one or two screws per arch, the rest are tabs. the front one has a hidden one towards the front end. you have to remove a metal clip first before you can remove the whole arch.
that's the screw. t20torx i think.
that's the clip. same for both front and back.
3)next, put the wheels back if you are using the factory jack point.
4)remove the underbody panel. they run from the back of front wheel to the front of the rear wheel. one on each side. held on by a bunch of t10 torx screws. pretty obvious once you get down. cayenne is tall enough for me the squeeze under.
5)pop this panel out:
6)open doors then remove the trim at the base to expose the nuts holding the panel you are going to replace. the back one just pops out and the front one is a little tricky at the front end because of the door.
7)next, remove the hex nuts. 12mm. the first one in the front of the car is the only difficult thing in the whole install. the bolt spins freely so you can't remove the nut. i ended up cutting them off and replaced them with just some spare nuts and bolts( you have to bend the metal tab towards you to insert the bolt obviously). now you can remove the panel.
this is the devil nut/bolt.
this does not work. the bolt has a plastic coating like loctite to prevent it from coming loose. very hard to un-bolt.
this is what it looks like before.
new bolt insterted. sorry can't rotate the pic. right side is up.
8)now you can install the new running board. line up the holes with the bolt and then reinstall all of the nuts you took off. put back everything. pretty easy actually. the only trick i like to share is i used a clamp to hold the arch to the car and line it up nicely before i put back the metal tab.

Any chance you might want to sell that bottom trim piece that you replaced with the running boards? Mine came with factory running boards that I'd like to remove but I can't find that trim piece anywhere (nor did I know what to call it when searching).
Now that I think about it, shipping might be too much of a nightmare.

great pics, thanks!
Would you mind taking a pic of the underside to show how much protection the running boards provide the underside? The 957 running boards were super beefy and very effective off-road protectors. Thank you!

right side is out and black plastic on the left is the factory under cover.
see the factory jack point. the aluminum is part of the board. it connects with the factory under cover to the left. see how wide the running board is?

That is a fantastic pic - thank you very much for taking the time to shoot that! No need for a lift!
Interesting that the 957 running board/rock rail extends all the way and replaces even the plastic underbody covering. Not many people must offroad these 958's!
Thanks again, I appreciate it!

Wonder how well paint would hold up on them? I've exorcized all the silver on the outside so the raw aluminum would look weird.

Damn! That's a nice savings over the OEM version
