Blackvue DR650GW-2CH dashcam install

My dashcam arrived but before I start, wanted to know if anyone has any tips on installing in Cayenne 958?

I installed the Blackvue DR750LW in my Tesla Model S successfully but the screen buttons are now not working properly and it's rather large up front so for the Cayenne, decided to go with the 650. I have the writeup for the Tesla if anyone is interested.

I'm curious about which fuses position(s) to use, tips on removing panels and running wire thru wire conduits in rear hatch (left or right preferred?), etc. For the Cayenne, I got the Power Magic Pro (PMP) even though the Cayenne does have the built in low voltage warning/shutoff, I'd rather not rely on that or even trigger it. The PMP wasn't needed for the Tesla given the 12V battery is charged by the main battery which can power my entire house for a few weeks!

Thanks,

The lack of clear information on which fuses were available made do a review of what I had on both Driver and Passenger side.

Here's what I found on my 2012 Porsche Cayenne turbo:

Driver side fuses. (see available options listed at bottom)

Passenger side fuses. (see available options listed at bottom)

What I've decided is to use the passenger side, fuse 27 for the always on and fuse 18 for switched on.

I have the DR600GW (front only) cam in my Cayenne. Great camera..but I was on the fence for getting the front/rear option as it seemed to be a painful task in running the wire to the rear hatch. Front install takes only minutes.

Curious if you finished your rear install and how you ran the wire to the rear window from the hatch. I am considering putting my front only in my wife's car and opting for front rear in mine.

Thanks for the fuse box pics...took me some time to figure out which was always on..since many seem to stay on for 30 min then off or so. Your chart would have helped solve that issue.

Finished the install with rear camera. Wasn't too bad and am happy with the outcome. The PMP (power magic pro) is nicely mounted inside the glove box on right top. Wires from the passenger fuse box go right into it luckily and are hidden. Routed rear camera wire and power between inside rear view mirror trim and headliner, then across top of windshield tucked in to liner using my hand made tool, then across A-pillar where then the wires then separate with power going down to fuse box and the camera wire going back, both inside the rubber door seal fits well and easy to run. When crossing the pillars in order to tuck the camera wire in, I used my handmade plastic push piece which is about 1/16" thick so as not to dig into the insulation of the wire. Then ran back to rear hatch opening and up the rubber seal again (actually inside the headliner) till I got to the center. Remove the ceiling light to expose a couple small holes in the metal structure allows the wire to be routed from below up thru the structure and allow it to enter the rubber cable conduit (I used the left side). Remove the cable conduit and use a little wire lube to feed a copper wire up thru it then to pull the camera cable thru. Refasten the rubber cable conduit. Extra cable wire fits nicely under center trim of hatch so that only the smallest wire seen coming from the trim. Very neat. Same as in front. Took a lot of planning but could do it again in an hour or so.

hand made platic pusher (from bottom of old 5 gallon bucket)

PM hidden in glove top right. Used velcro rather than the double stick they provided so easily removable if need be.

position of front camera. note short wires shown.

rear camera also note short wire shown.

routing thru rubber conduit in hatch

looking thru hole where hatch light was to see hole in roof structure. lucky to find it using flashlight.

routing thru roof structure. so cable went from just under the rubber seal back a few inches to the hole thru the structure, then back to the rubber cable conduit then short feed into area under hatch trim.

note. didn't cut either the power plug or cigarette receptacle as they fit well inside the fuse box. May go in later and take them out along with all the excess wiring and solder them. keeping as is for any warranty issues.

Great write up thanks. What did you use to pull the wire through the headliner? How much of a challenge was that step?

Only place where pulled thru headliner was in far back near lite at back of car and that was easy with access by pulling down headliner and access thru light opening. Used either heavy monofilament or copper wire. It's only a few inches forward to get to the hole thru the metal roof structure between the headliner and the cable routing and then back thru the cable conduit.

Thanks. That was the intent.
I suggest thedashcamstore.com as seller as they provide the add-a-fuses and support plus their price is good. they are seller on amazon but direct is better pricing. I dealt with Andrew Hunter.

Blackboxmycar has it on sale for $308 for 16gb version with Free PowerMagicPro and free shipping. Add it to your card to see sale price. Probably best deal I found and you can buy a 64gb sd card very cheap on Amazon

They also have a great informative site. http://www.blackboxmycar.com/

After running for a few days and convinced I won't have to send it back, I've removed all the excess and unnecessary wiring in the passenger fuse box. I believe it was blocking air flow to the front duct as well. Before and after picture and the excess wires removed. I cut, soldered and shrinkwrapped things up.

Packed with all wiring that came with unit.

removed excess wiring.

clean install now with minimum wires and free flow of air to vent.

Looks very clean. However, I don't think any airflow from the front vent goes through the fuse compartment.

After reading your post I went out to check mine (wanted to make sure I wasn't blocking air as my set up looks identical to your "before"). But the air is routed through a duct and not the fuse area in my 2015.

Thanks for follow up. I wasn't sure but couldn't see a duct and it appeared that whole area was right behind the vent. Curious, is duct is on bottom of vent or where? Anyway I'm glad to have cleaned or up.

If you look at your pics of the fuse box, the top smaller opening. It is behind that white tab.

I ran my vents full speed with the cover off and there was no air flowing through the fuse area (beyond a little leakage from where the duct connects to the vent).

I just ordered the DR650 so I will be upgrading to the front and rear set up and using your wiring guide. Luckily the power line is the same for both models so I only have to run the one wire to the rear.
