CEL / Start-Stop disabled and PCM failure when I started up my car this morning. It threw 8 codes including misfires on cylinders 1 and 8. We had a bad rainstorm yesterday where it rained sideways and I wonder if this caused anything. I let the car run, drove it around and cleared codes and all was fine. As I was sitting in my driveway the car started to sputter again and the same codes came back up/ Cracked igintion coils maybe? The new battery causing issues? I am at a loss this morning as I was going to take the family on a day trip. I can't catch a break man. I really can't.
24 hour update: I put 60 miles on the car after all my issues yesterday morning. The rainstorm we had literally blew sideways and my thinking is that cylinder 8 (farthest back on the right of the engine) and cylinder 1 (closest on the left of the engine) must of took the brunt of that storm in regards to rain getting under the hood. Here were the codes.
New battery installed Saturday I wanted to see if you all thought this looked ok.
Should I purchase the Suncoast Porsche special at the moment
The invalid signal from TCM is interesting. the TCM is located underneath the passenger seat so have a look for any wetness or damp areas in the footwell. It seems strange to me that you would lose 2 coils without warning...
To rule out the coils, try simply swapping “good” coils with the ones you are suspect of. For example, swap cylinder 2 (good, no misfires) and cylinder 8 (suspect bad). That will tell you immediately if you have a bad coil without spending $400. Changing coils is not too bad, just make sure you go easy on the aluminum bolts which hold the coils down. They break REAL easy.
Hey man! Thank you for the feedback. Do you think that the TCL issue has anything to do with that sensor that is in place in the tube you remove when changing out the cabin filter? Where exactly is the TCL and what should I look for. There isn’t any moisture there at the moment. I’ll take a quick look again. All of these memory fault codes are annoying I see deep in the scan. I thought after I cleared them they would not come back. Is there any step I am missing from DIY swapping a new battery? Thanks for your help as usual my friend.
Symptoms are getting worse. Could the newly installed battery have anything to do with this or is is just a really bad coincidence that this happened the same week? Multiple misfires now each morning for the past 3 days and today was the worst day so far. Here are all the codes.
P2323 Ignition Coil H Secondary Circuit
P0358 Ignition Coil H Primary / Secondary Circuit

Thanks all for your help. I guess I have no choice now but to take it to Porsche.
Doing this now. I started on the driver side at cylinder 8. Guess which coil from the photo came out of cylinder 8? Unreal. Issues gone. CEL off. Just test drove her and she’s purring away. Gotta do the passenger side now. Unreal this was the issues.

Hey TJ, I never cease learning from your adventures!
This confirms what they say about changing out all the coils if you have 1 or 2+ going bad. IIRC the Factory Service Manual &/or Owners Manual has a recco'd service life & change out for the coils, but if not in the OM, then you'll have to call the dealer & get them to look it up for you (60K sticks in my mind, but then I have Half-zymers ).
You can also save any old ones that look good as "test coils" later to swap in (if any are uncracked), if it ever comes up again with mystery codes &/or running issues.
On another line - it looks iffy for our Steelers to play any or much this year, and our Bucs may not finish if the players across both Leagues aren't more careful like the Basketballers & Hockey Leagues have done with stricter measures & their "Bubbles".
BTW - our Cayenne quest had been on hold due to business stuff keeping me too busy to look, then CV-19 has us driving less than 30-50 miles a month since March, & it doesn't make any sense to buy another vehicle to sit - especially when all of our vintage trailer rallies etc. are also off until 2021 - so nothing to need towing. I keep a look out for a great deal, but probably won't actively look until things get back to normal-ish.
Take Care!
Tom - your fellow Bower Hill Rd. Buddy!

So good to hear from you. I hope you are doing well and staying safe. Cylinders 1 through 3 had good coils on the passenger side and cylinder 4 was bad for a total of 5 bad coils out of the 8. Yesterday I replaced all the spark plugs, the ignition coils on the passenger side and 2 air filters since I was in there and she is running pretty good now. I am just waiting for my driving cyles to make those permanent code fall off my scanner. The engine torque mount was in great shape which leads me to believe it had already been replaced. I also believe that becuase a torx bolt was holding it in place and not the Porsche preferred type. Our Pirates are so awful and unwatchable, The Pens dissapointed us greatly and the Steelers hopes fall on the rebuilt arm of Big Ben. Here’s hoping 2020 gets better. Take care!

Awwh TJ - you know that we have to watch & support our guys anyway - coming from a guy who watched them since as a kid on my Grandfather's lap in the 1950's, & through the Roberto days! Neither the Bucs nor the Steelers were great all the time through those years, & the Hornets either - before the 'Quins. Yes, the Steelers need to start thinking succession planning for Ben, since he's at that age, but at least we won't have to fret over that dang Brady with the Pats anymore!
After my Little League days up to HS - I've not been much of a baseball fan anyway - having gravitated more toward playing Pop Warner at age 7 back in PGH then San Diego to HS Football, then Rugby XVs from college thru Div. 1 to Old Boyz for 26 years to `96 (mostly Scrumhalf if you know the sport). So I prefer to watch the Steelers/Football & Rugby for spectating now in my 60's. Oddly enough - back when the LA/Orange County had no pro football, OC developed a big Steelers following, & I'd run into Southwest flights full of Steelers Fans returning to OC from games in Pgh etc.
I'd love to get back to PGH some Summer for the PGH Vintage Grand Prix race & event, cuz that started after we moved to San Diego in 1962 with his job change from Koppers in PGH, to Whitaker in SD (I was 10, but always a Steeler, Bucs, Hornets/Penquins fan).
PS - I'd been thinking that I could bring either my `73 914-2.0 when it's resto is done, or our `85 BMW E30 325e Coupe when it's repaint/refurb, or our `88 VW Westfalia (repaint/refurb done 2012-13), or tow our vintage `60 Avion T20 with our tbd Cayenne &/or our `70 Puck with any of the classic cars - or sequentially in successive years - but that is a long drive, having done it off-&-on yearly since 1962!
Good idea to change out all of that while you were in there, which is what the better P-dealers & Indie-P-techs recco.
For all - Another area to clean out regularly recco's by a Cayenne expert P-dealer tech is the well area below the cowl in front of the windshield, because leaves, dirt & other litter can build up in there - blocking the drains in the bottom, then causing random leaks into the cabin, as well as into unibody cavities. He said to do it at least annually, & more often if parking near/under trees & vegetated hillsides where the stuff can fall & blow in (e.g.: anywhere in PGH ;-).
So - if a random water leak under under the dash area &/or wet carpet in the footwells/firewall areas - check & clean out your cowl well.
The Vintage is a must see each year! It was disappointing to miss it this year for sure. Even after changing the spark plugs, ignition coils and air filters in my Cayenne I am still getting a slight tremor at idle. I might take a second look a the engine torque damper tomorrow and make sure it is properly tightened to 46 ft-lbs. I hope that fixes the shake. I look over and see the passenger seat belt vibrating and I know that should not be happening. I will definitely be sure to keep an eye out on my cowl. Thank you as always for your wonderful advice. When you make your way back home make sure you look me up!
