I've been told that the original california duster w/ the wooden handle is suppose to have wax on the fibers and it's safe. The newer ones with the plastic handles and imitation california dusters have the silicone-based oils. The problem is somewhat the oils in the cotton fibers, but more importantly, it's the fibers themselves once they're laden with dirt. Most people use the duster in the place of washing; it was never intended for that. It was made for car shows when light dust landed on a prepped car and you needed to clean up the finish before judging.

The problem I have with the duster is its claim that it works better as it gets dirtier. I know some will claim that you don't actually plop the duster on the paint and start moving it around, but most people do. So now, you're moving the cotton fibers, w/ the silicone oils, and the dirt which is basically microscopic rocks. This is a sure fire recipe for scratches and micromarring.

So in recap, in my opinion, the dirt that gets trapped in the duster and is held there by the oils makes this duster more of a problem than a solution.

How do you keep the Zymol duster clean? Is it sufficient to shake it out between uses, and then wash it once in a while?

The duster is simply disgarded after 6 months of use. You can tell you need a new one when the fibers start to bunch up and it gets more of a grey look than the off-white.
