Detailing on SL55

Hello !

I've been reading this part of the forum for quite some time and i decided i want to do my own detailing from now on

So, what kind of products do you guys recomend using on this type of colour, wheels and leather interior ?

1. Washing : Swissvax or Zymol
2. Wash mitt : ?
3. Drying the car : Air of MF ? (Models, brand)
4. Claying : Zymol or Swissvax
5. Claying Lube : ?
6. Do i need to wash it again before i start doing the polish ?
7. Polish : Porter Cable
8. Pads : I have no ideea here what to choose, there are so many
9. Actual Polish : Again...no ideea. I've seen Menzerna is quite popular
10. Glaze or sealant ? Or both ?
11. Wax : Swissvax Saphire or Zymol (Or something that works well on this colour)
12. Leather seats : Zymol or Swissvax (Anything else than cleaner & milk?)
13. Dashboard : ? (Looks like leather to me, should i use the same products?)

Any other advices, products are much apreciated !
I must say i have never polished before so, as all beginers i am a bit affraid of not ruining my clear coat or paint. So again...any advices, tehniques, movies are much apreciated.

Please excuse my spelling, i speak it better than i write it

The car has no deep scratches, only light swirls. I always detailed my interior but the exterior has been under alot of chemicals : No touch washing But not anymore ! With your help and years of experience and my will to learn and start taking care of it "The proper way !"

Here are some more pictures with the sun hiting the paint. I have no ideea what the paint is called. In my registration it was marked as Yellow but it's more like a goldish, champagne when the sun hits it.

Meg's OTC car wash is okay, Zaino Z7 is good too.

2. Wash mitt : ?
Not too important, so long as it's soft and very clean, key here is keeping it clean....

3. Drying the car : Air of MF ? (Models, brand)
230+mph electric leaf blower to start, then MF towels to touch up with a detail spray. (Target actually has a good brand of MF called VROOM)

4. Claying : Zymol or Swissvax
I like Meg's white clay, it's mild but not too soft.

5. Claying Lube : ?
I use Meg's QD cut with water 4:1 ratio

6. Do i need to wash it again before i start doing the polish ?
No, the polish will remove any residue from the claybaring.

7. Polish : Porter Cable
Good choice.

8. Pads : I have no ideea here what to choose, there are so many
Lake Country makes a good brand, for a new MB clearcoat, you'll need a few orange cutting, a few white and a couple black for sealing.

9. Actual Polish : Again...no ideea. I've seen Menzerna is quite popular
Menz SIP and 106 are good combo's for hard clears.

10. Glaze or sealant ? Or both ?
No glaze, the oils will keep the sealants from bonding.
I like Zaino Z5/Z2 sealants, but there's a few good choices out there.

11. Wax : Swissvax Saphire or Zymol (Or something that works well on this colour)
I hear a lot of good about P21 carnuaba wax.

12. Leather seats : Zymol or Swissvax (Anything else than cleaner & milk?)
If dried or hardened I like Leatherique for restoring, but for regular maintaince and conditioning I really like Zaino Z9/Z10, Lexol also makes good leather products.

13. Dashboard : ? (Looks like leather to me, should i use the same products?)
303 Aerospace Cleaner and Protection.

First off, there's loooooots of products out there, so you need to decide what's most important? Looks? durability? Ease of use? what?

I will answer in the quote. I'm a big fan of Zaino, so expect a few of them to be Zaino.

Thanks Josh.

Well, most important : Looks and ease of use since i am a total n00b in this field (Claybar, Polish, Seal, Wax). I don't mind spending time working on my car...i see it like a therapy

I'm just scared not to ruin the paintjob with the improper use of tools

No way you'll hurt or mess up the paint with a PC. I assume the MB is an 05 or newer?

The new MB's have a ceramic clear coat which is one of the hardest in the world. That doesn't mean it won't scratch though, but it will help to "resist" very fine scratches better.

Nope, it's a '04 model. So i guess no new ceramic cc.

What kind of polish should i use then ? Only the 106 with an orange pad ? I've read about 106 and it says that i don't need to use a finishing polish, just seal & wax after. What kind of pads should i use for sealing/waxing or should i just apply them by hand ?

106 is a finishing polish, I use the white lake country ccs pad, so you can go straight to a synthetic wax afterwards. What look are you going for? if you want gloss and shine, synthetic such as einszett is your answer. If you're using a synthetic wax, then you can apply it w/ a lake country red ccs pad. If you want depth and jetness of color, than a natural carnauba like zymol would be my recommendation.

Without inspecting the car in person, I would still say the same combo, it's a good combo, but with the older/softer clear you'll just get better results.

After all the polishing and final polish, I would rewash the car or at least do a 91% IPA (alcohol) wipe down. Menzerna uses a waxy like lube in there polishes so I would want to get them off the car before sealing so that the sealants can properly attach to the clear coat.

Sythetic polymer bases sealants will greatly outlast carnuaba waxes and after all that polishing anything you choose to protect is going to look great so choose what you like. For me I like the longer lasting protection.
