Cleaning tail pipes

Hi All,

I did a search and didn't come up with anything...someone (Moe) must have a product or technique to clean and polish the chrome tail pipes.

I have a 2008 M6 that I just tried my mother's power ball and polish, Eagle one wadding stuff, Stratch off, etc on. It's better but not perfect. The car is regularly cleaned, so the pipes are not even filthy. The rest of the car looks great, but the pipes are really pissing me off!

Thanks in advance!

Jan

Moe I have found that Simichrome gives more of a chrome appearance vs a milky look(when direct light reflects) that some of the other aluminum polishes tend to have.

Great!! That's the way metal should look. Now I really have to try it out. Thanks for the tip Paulie.

Here's a good how-to article on caring for your exhaust tips.

If you have any questions on anything, let me know.

My Tubi exhaust on my 360 is lined with holes the entire visible length of the pipes... Using any type of polish in there would result in the polish going into these holes and not coming out... Very difficult situation

tail pipe cleaning

I have tried all sorts of automotive products to clean the tailpipes - to no avail. Then I tried oven cleaner and bar-b-q clener and they seem to work much better, but have to mask surrounding areas with saran wrap, didn't want to take any chances of damaging paint.

I'd be very careful using products not intended for automotive purposes. Automotive performance exhausts are often made of aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, etc. Some of these materials can be damaged permanently if they come into contact with the incorrect product. For example, titanium can be permanently tarnished if a product with oils or a person with body oil even touches the metal. As soon as it's heated up, it will permanently discolor.

To be safe, post your specific questions here, and one of us would point you to the right direction. Cleaning tailpipes aren't usually a difficult task if the proper product and the proper technique is implemented.
