Those Collapsable Hoses You See On TV

We've all seen those TV commercials for a multitude of collapsible water hoses. All are variations on the original concept. I put off purchasing one of these inventions because of stories of almost immediate failures, leaks, and general inferior materials.

I finally took the plunge and bought a 50' collapsible hose made by DAP. It was advertised on TV just like the other brands however these hoses were the first ones I had seen that came with brass fittings. Took forever to get it (backordered) although the company did keep me informed as to the status of my order. When it came in I was impressed by the heaviness of the brass fittings which included a 90 degree shutoff valve. I hooked it up and, just like you see on TV, the hose expanded and snaked out to its full length.

Surprise, surprise, surprise. So far the hose has lived up to the TV hype. It is very light compared to a conventional hose. It gets very stiff when under water pressure but does not lose much when the water is on full blast. It's not 100% non-kinkable like they advertise, especially if you leave it wadded up when you turn the water on, but I give it a 98% success rate compared to a conventional hose. Because of the light weight it is easy to maneuver around wash buckets and tires. When you turn the water off and drain the hose it retracts back as it drains. Maybe not as well as you see on TV but once it is drained you can pick up the whole hose in one hand and put it away. One of the best aspects of this hose is I got rid of the hose reel monster I used for my conventional hose. It was a royal PITA to rewind the hose. With the collapsible hose I can just pile it up under the faucet out of the way. I've order two shorter versions for other faucets around the house.

So, I recommend it.

I've got two of these on the work bench and I have yet to use one. Time to give it a try! Thanks for the review.

it got horrible reviews on amazon. its such a great idea though i want it to work keep us posted.
ps the whole thing has to be laid out right? unlike a normal hose that can hang and you can just loop off what you need.

I found it on a clearance table in a small shop, so I bought 2. One didn't survive the winter. At least I have a spare.

Both of mine died within weeks. My driveway is paver and it got abraded dragging around washing the cars. Mine was not the DAP brand, but the HD Hose.

I find them to be a waste of time.. But I spend time extending it out to it's max length.

The only benefit was when I was carrying one around in my car trunk it was smaller. Also they seem rather "fragile"... i'm not really sure how long they are going to last with normal garden and driveway abuse..

I'm hooked on these things. They fail quite often, but I buy them at the local Bed Bath & Beyond and exchange every time they pop. I know it is a PITA, but I can't go back to huge and cumbersome traditional hoses.

I have had the original and the DAP. The DAP, which I thought would be better because of the brass fittings, leaked as soon as I connected it.

My black one with the brass fittings split the inside watering my plants 2 days ago. I also had the green ones and they leaked. I really do like using them though.

Tried it once, all I can say is waste of money, a regular garden hose can surely out perform it.
