Can you guys give me some info on things to look for or check regarding 360s? I am looking at a late 2001 build spyder with F1 tranny.

There is a fair amount to consider here that needs an experienced eye.

With F1 make sure it's had the TCU software updates and find what % of clutch wear is showing.

Have the car checked by a knowledgeable Ferrari person (full PPI) to ensure all the services have been done, belts are up to date, and that everything is in order.

You also want top mechanism and fluids checked. That can be an annoyance.

Mileage is not a critical concern; prior services are.

If I decided to pull the trigger, I would most likely have Ferrari Newport Beach do the PPI unless you have any recommendations. The car has a 9/01 build date and has 6k miles. My concern is that it has only had a 5k service and I feel based on time alone it should have had a 15k service. What do you think?

5K service is mostly fluid changes-engine & tranny oil, brake fluid, and coolant. Not very major.

This car desparately needs a 15K service which includes belts, etc., and for that car to be driven for 5 years with no belt changes is asking for big trouble if the belts let go at this point. Ferrari's recommendation is every 15K miles or 3 years!

If it's not a Ferrari dealer selling the car (Which I doubt it is) for Southern Calif I would recommend Eugenio's Service. See: http://emelbon.tripod.com/eugeniosferrariservice.html

I have a few friends who have used him and rave about his honesty and thoroughness. He's an excellent independent.

Approach this car carefully and adjust pricing for the cost of the required services.

Don't rush into it. There are many good cars for sale.

you want the records of all it service history....every 3 years belts and fluids etc...timing belts, tentioners, bearings and all fluids...this will run you 3 to 4k depending on where you are and who you go to....when they do the inspection on the car they will be able to give you clutch wear and brakes...clutch can be some coinage ....this car was only driven 1k per year so that's good...but hard miles can be done in short periods ...you can factor services into the price should the car need them soon....

find one where you know and trust the history. it's not just about having the services done, it's about having them done correctly too. who cares if the major was done if it wasn't done the right way (eg, cutting corners)... and that happens a lot more than people think. folks balk at some prices reputable fcar dealers ask (service and sales) but there's a reason people continue to pay that "premium". just like any profession, there is a lot of skill and care involved. major service definitely does not always equal major service!

GL.

oh, and like gcalo said, make sure everything related to f1 tranny has been fixed/updated. i had an '01 360 f1 and got stranded twice when the car got stuck in neutral (which was a somewhat common problem back then).

1k miles /year is too low, you gotta worry about seal, etc. IMO, this car hasn't been driven long enough to have the faulty stuff sorted out. I preferred a car that has a little bit more mileage with service records knowing the faulty stuff has been sorted out.

I think that if the car is sound and the 15K is done, that should clear up any seal issues.

An 02 will not present anything much different from that of an 01.

Have the 01 looked at first. It may cost $300-$500 for the PPI but one such as Eugenio would know best, and that would be $ well spent.

Investigate them all.

That's why I suggested not to rush into this deal but don't run from it either if it shows promise.

Someone told me that the 02 has an updated clutch in addition to the TCU upgrade, is this true?

The upgraded clutch is applicable to all 360's. So, an 02 is not going to be very different from an 01. The upgrade, I believe, is a different ring gear assembly with a few additional item changes.

All F1 models can have the TCU software upgrade.

Buying a 360 should not be like "pulling teeth"! Don't make it so.
