1st Track day experience, 997 GT3, Buttonwillow

Rediculous fun! I zipped over to Buttonwillow from SLO at 5:30 this morning to enjoy my first track time in the GT3. It was well worth it! What an amazing, intoxicating Car!!! It is everything I hoped it would be when I spent the dough.

M3s have been my track weapon for the last 3 years and some Skip Barber Racing and Karting. The GT3 is the most like Karting of anything I have experienced. Porsche's expertise and experience show. This car is worth every penny.

Today I had commitments for an afternoon BBQ, but since I am going to Laguna Seca on Tuesday with the GT3, I thought perhaps I could squeeze in a few shakedown laps at BW. It was worth the trip. BW is a track I am very familiar with in both my E46 and E36 M3s. The GT3 is such a different animal. I was giggling and grinning all morning. The rush of power, rock stable braking, quick turn in, ability to turn the car with brakes or thottle lift or power, the choices are numerous. It inspires confidence! A Lotus Elise was in my stable for a while and I enjoyed that car at the track, but this is a refined Elise on Steriods and Human Growth Hormones.

FUN, FUN, FUN!!! I hope to see you all at the Track someday. My Name is Kevin Nichols, I'll be in the Red GT3 with the silly grin. Come out and play. Teach me how to relax these cheek muscles, their sore. Cheers!

I was also at BW recently with my 997GT3(first time at the track), and I must say that I have to go back again.Since it was my first time at the track, I was hesistant of pushing it and was nowhere close to the limits of what the car can do. However, I wanted to see what it can do and I let one of the instructor drove my car. I felt kind of dizzy/sick afterwards. The instructor's name was Todd(he used to own Trackquest) and he can really drive.

I was at Buttonwillow as well on Saturday... First time at Button, love the track! It's sort of a mix between big Willow and streets of Willow... I only have a 997S though... I opted to keep that and get a gallardo, I'm trying to figure out how I can trade in the 997 and get a GT3 but the wife will veto that, she was nice enough to let me get the Gallardo and keep the Porsche too, so I'm not going to push it... Maybe next year?
I only saw one GT3 there on Saturday, a red one... who's was that?

BW is a great track, quite technical and loads of FUN! Todd is a great driver and friend. Did he have his GT2 there?

We do private events there almost monthly (as well as at Willow Springs) -- we split the cost amongst the participants -- total of 12-15 cars. Open lapping format with tons of track time (maybe even too much, if that's possible). Limited to people with some track experience as formal instruction is not offered, although newbies can hire (at additional cost) people like Todd Serota (former owner of Trackquest) or Craig Stanton. They are allowed to go out solo only after the instructor signs them off.

Group photo from one of recent BW event...

Jack,
Yes, Todd had his yellow GT2. He was going head to head with Brad(one of 10 instructors there that day)from Evosport. We had a nice turn out with CGT, RS, LP649,F430 spider, F360 spider, Ford GT,997GT3, 997TT.

Yes that was me. I was out by 11:45 so I did not get a chance to stop by and say hello. I saw your car at the front of the paddock. I am sure your S is wonderful at the track as well (and a much better DD than the GT3) and it sounds like your spouse is very loving and understanding... and no doubt will warm to the idea of the GT3!

I will try to film at Laguna Seca Tuesday. Although I don't know if/or how to post the footage here.

I am very excited to get up there. I am trying NOT to be the guy with the dealer plate on, that puts it in the wall. The GT3 just makes you feel like Superman...perhaps far too quickly. There are far too many stories about new buyers balling up their new ride and saying afterwards that they made a rookie mistake and lifted, etc. while they were high from the excitement.

Are there any 911 drivers with experience willing to work with me Tuesday? My time at LS is moderate, but all in an M3 or Skip Barber Formula 2000 cars. No doubt the 911 has unique charactoristics at LS I need to learn. Any pointers?

stuff some foam in your intake and get a turn down pipe for exhaust. you will NOT pass sound check, even with sport button off, you will be at 94db.

move left and short shift to 4th as you go up to T6.

Thanks for the Heads Up. I think I had read other posters say they were too loud with stock GT3 exhaust. Will have to lift between 5 and 6.

The foam should be easy to find. Where do you find the turn downs? Probably I will not be able to find them today but will need them for the future.
