How loud is a GT3 at WOT?

Hi,

One thing I enjoy most about my cars is how they sound. I like them loud because I feel the car is communicating with me more. Not painfully loud, but loud enough to make thunder when I want to.

How loud is the GT3 at WOT? Is it like a Boxster or Carrera? Those aren't too loud until you hit 6500+, and even then it could use some good noise-boosting.

How does it sound in the mid-range RPMs? That's important too.

Thanks!

Mike

The car sounds awesome from about 4000 on up with sport mode on especially with the windows down. Blasting through the gears to redline never fails to put a smile on my face. I'll also add that it is louder than a 996 with PSE.

This video was taken before I had my GMG center section installed, but there are some full throttle passes with the sport mode engaged. Enjoy... (turn up the volume)

It sounds good in sport mode at idle and from about 3K on up (the valves open with decent throttle). It's loud enough to make you say, "hmm, this sounds good". At 4K on up, the valves are open under part throttle, too.. sounds very nice in this range, like a creamy, high pitched purr.

Way up top, I wouldn't say it gets a whole lot louder, and it basically keeps the same tone as it spins up to redline. Actually, I was expecting something a little more special (like a nice change in intake/exhaust tone) during the last thousand or so rpm, but I don't really hear it. [My old 996TT (stock) had this really special ripping type whining sound in the last 500 rpm before redline that sounded really good. It sounded intake related, to me. Unfortunately, it didn't last long enough; the rest of the rpm range the car sounded like nothing.]

Also, like most modern sports cars, there's little burble on the over-run. This is really a disappointment for me. Those great sounds on the over-run really made up half of a car's special sound. Now, they've been replaced by a constant rrrmmm sound.. no character. I guess un-burnt fuel in the exhaust is a no-no these days.

All in all, a stock GT3's sound is pretty satisfying. Could it be even better and a little louder? Sure, but it's good enough that you really dont need to mess with it. Well, maybe a new rear section..

The sound of a GT3 at 8k RPM's is like nothing I have ever experienced in any other car.

Definetely one of the best sounds I've heard.

My friend has the muffler by-pass pipes on his, and man does that thing sound amazing!

All I know is that it is too loud (98db) coming out of turn 5 at Laguna Seca in 3rd gear. Black flag!

Wow, that muffler bypass sounds really good!

Is it 98 dba at WOT? That is pretty damn loud for a stock car.

Thanks guys...you answered my questions I used to own a 987 Boxster which was ~86 dba at WOT and I thought it needed MUCH more noise

You can't exactly call it a "cheap thrill" but it is a thrill none the less.
