Why is the GT3 considered "best" 911?

I been doing a lot of reading lately and am looking for the best daily driving sports car under 150K. It appears to me that the 911 is that car. The question is 997tt or 997 GT3? I have a turbo now and realize the tt is faster than the GT3, but all the critics say the GT3 is the best all around car. I'm wondering why its so much better? Is the suspension different? balance different? I know it sounds better, but what did Porsche do to that car to make it such a drivers car?

It's a raw car designed for the purist. Those who cherish a balanced controlled track vehicle as opposed to pure stupid horsepower.

There is more to a car than 0-60 time.

Well the E30 M3 is the "best" M3, BUT, it by far and away is NOT the best car for everyday use, and yes, i've had a few. I would go with a tt for a driver.

I think that it depends on what you are ultimately interested in. TT more comfort/grand tourer that can be driven hard on the track while GT3 harder edged track weapon that can be leisurely driven daily. I appreciated the TT, but when it came time to purchasing one or the other, I preferred the GT3 (cost was very similar). Don't let anyone (even the magazine critics) talk you into anything. I suggest that you drive them back to back and choose whichever one makes you smile more. Best of luck with whatever you decide, either way you can't go wrong.

it's not fair to say other 911 variant don't have soul but that depends on where are u coming from & what have u experienced in the past. it won't take u more than 5 mins to find out why behind the wheel. a lot faster then reading words here.

once u go GT it's hard to go back.

As others have said it depends on what you want. I really want a GT3 and will cave in eventually and buy one. BUT there is a place for "stupid" horsepower, and if you want as much power with as little effort as possible turbo's are hard to beat.

At the end of the day you are really debating about which supermodel you are going to date. Either way you win.

I would say the turbo is the best all round 911. Point to point on a wet windy day the turbo will get you there in comfort and on time quicker than anything else around. Then when you get there you can take it on the track and have a blast.
The GT3 is the best driving 911. Pure spirit, more responsive higher revving engine, a weapon you can point at a corner and go. More driver feel and involvement. But those things come at a price when you are looking at a daily driver. I haven't driven the new turbo or GT3 my experience is with the 996 variants.
The principles remain the same otherwise why both making both in the first place.

I'd say the GT3 is the ultimate 911 because it's the most driver dependant for performance and includes the most driver involvement of any 911 as well. This is what Porsche is all about. Not to mention its the racing entity so it has to be.

Well said! It's all relative. How skilled and "serious" are the people who state the GT3 is the best? I have 2 friends with GT3s. They LOVED the idea. Both of them have discovered that they tend to leave them parked and usually drive other cars. Personally, I really like the GT3s but have been spoiled by modded older 911s and 930s and there is NOTHING like a car that puts demands on the driver and reminds him that he isn't driving some little puppy dog of a car. You may really like the idea of a particular car, but the reality of owning and driving whatever-it-is may be very different in the real world where you actually get to use the car. Good hunting.

Unless you live here:

don't buy a GT3 for a daily driver!! Stick to a C2S or a TT. I just installed a new front spoiler on my 3 and drove to the city yesterday, scraped the %hit out of it going into the gas station to get fuel!! But had a great time getting there and back home again!

Ohhhhh man. That used to be my favorite drive! Until they got all the houses up on Hi 1.... Still is lovely and fun, but you have to respect that people will be using some of those driveways tucked away all over. And, yes, it is a problem with that nose making love to the roadway.
I don't dare suggest raising your ride height a tad. :-> I have a GT2 with the same factor. [This makes the perfect excuse for a companion modded early 911. After a couple of fun hours you can't hear yourself think and the GT2/3 feels like a Lexus.]
THANKS! It's always great to have a reminder that lovely piece of road isn't all that far away.
sigh

Josh is right -- take Mark' s RS for a spin... not all that different than a standard 997 GT3 -- and you will see.

I drove and 996tt x-50 and my 996 GT3 back to back on a test drive when I was looking at them... same test drive loop...

I drove the tt first and it was great... 5 minutes in the GT3 and I had picked the car for me.

As you also have the M6 and ML63... I would say a 997 3 is right up your alley... especially as I know you are planning on tracking this year.

Also it is a pretty limited risk... buy one... like it then great and if you do not... you can sell it for what you bought it for... (ask vincent)

somewhat difficult to paint a clear picture of the main differences without using words like "raw", "visceral", "pure" etc...

It all comes down to use and preference... you want to get to Corvalis in a hurry in comfort -- TT

Everything else.. GT3 in my opinion.

Which is just an opinion and you know what they say...

I am pretty sure you could sell it locally if you decided you did not like it... lig, dubercars, vincent... etc... someone would take it... they are that great.

PJ - good advice.

997 GT3 or RS = pure lust.

The crazy thing is that the car has a sharp, NA focus to it without being unduly harsh. It would work for me as a daily if needed.

Right now the S4 is my daily and the C2S and S2000 are the play cars but if the right 997 GT3 came along - I could see selling the S4 +C2S and going with the GT3 as a daily and play car.

Go ahead and order a white one with cocoa leather with white console and seatbacks - drive it for a while and make me a good deal if you don't like it.
