In the interests of greater speed, they make it pretty clear in the owners manual that the 5 year anti-corrosion warranty does not apply. I did not know about the galvanic, that is reassuring.

Ooopss! Sorry, I didn't realise. However a couple things to take into consideration...

-the gt3 is probably not the most appropriate car to drive in the snow and you may not choose to drive it in these conditions. For normally wet weather conditions, corrosion is unlikely to be an issue due to the galvanised body (both in and out) and paint... To be honest, I have a home just 500m off shore and dispite the high salinity, none of the galvinised fixtures (fencing fixings, lintels etc) have shown signs of corrosion after 4 years whereas other metallic items (i.e. door handles and external tapware) are already showing corrosion.

- after market under body protection is available and relatively inexpensive. The weight gain is unlikely to be of concern to you considering the added protection it will provide for your environment. Just ensure they protect suspension and other key items when they spray the underbody...

the dealer should hopefully be able to clarify what isn't done and the difference in warranty relative to the rest of the porsche fleet.

Cheers
Chris

I checked on the Porsche site. The warranties for the Carrera and GT3 models are identical, on all aspects.

Gt3

I've driven my car for over 2 years straight as a daily driver which includes each and every snow storm and lousy weather. I can say with certainty that my car has not rusted apart or show any signs of ill effects from the rain, salt, and snow.

As a side note, since my driveway is gravel, I use the unusually low front splitter to actually "plow" the snow during the winter. Works just fine as long as you have snow tires.

Still my daily driver. 14k miles in almost 18 months now and still loving it. Obviously, not a luxury car and it's noisey, but I still get a smile everytime I get into it. I've had two flats due to potholes this past winter (the weather in Seattle really wreaked havok on the roads) and I'm on my 3rd chin splitter. But other than that, no issues. The only thing that bugs me is the attention is attracts at the fuel pumps, etc. Definitely made the right choice not going w/ the R8.

If large crowds are your biggest problem, then sounds like it's all good. A buddy of mine had a 996 GT3 as a DD but he said it was just too harsh for the task and he sold it (and he's no wimp). I've not driven either, but I'm told that the 997 is a totally different experience. I've considered upgrading to a GT3 in the past, but only if it's possible to be a DD (I already have a garage queen) so this is great to hear.
Enjoy!

My GT3 has 45k miles - still running strong with no issues and just completed a 45k mile service. I would say my car looks and runs just as well as a 15k mile GT3, I couldn't be happier with it.

GT3's have a much stronger and more reliable block than the C2. A new C2 motor costs around $10k and new GT3 motor costs around $50k, reflecting the much higher standard of parts and build quality in the GT3 motor.

A month ago today, I picked up a GT3 RS and have driven it daily, adding nearly 3,000 miles. Every car I've bought is or was used as a daily driver. I don't see a lot of sense in having an asset and not enjoying it.

nothing wrong with using your car as a DD. One thing i think to remember are the idiots who will ding your door for no apparent reason... Thats why i have a junker to drive most of the time. it has dings in places i didn't think you could have them.....

Yes, no disposable motors in the GT3 (or gearbox for that matter) -- that's the main reason I wanted a GT3. You can tune a C2 to the same level of perf as the GT3 by the numbers (C2 /w powerkit isn't that far off from the factory), but the GT3 has a much stouter drivetrain so it'll keep on goin' well after the C2 motor has gone belly-up.

It was still hard to find GT3s when I bought mine but I kept on looking because I couldn't bear to spend almost as much on a C2S as a GT3 knowing the GT3 has such a superior drivetrain which will = greater reliability on street or track. When you consider the drivetrain, the GT3 is a great value relative to the standard 911.

As for a DD, mine is, and it's been great. Best car I've ever owned and am looking forward to the next gen version (not the 7MK2, but 99?). Possibly the only regret for DD was aftermarket exhaust. I LOVE the sound when I want it to be loud, but it can be a bit much at times. I may end-up switching back to stock.
