this is rather silly...

i was at a gas station to fill up. open the gas lid and removed the gas cap and let it hang like i normally do. turned around and insert my debit card but card reader at this pump was not working. so i got back in the car to move to the other pump on the other side when i hear a loud 'crack'. what the hell. the gas cap lodged inside the fender and wheel gap. ah still in one piece. no biggie. i proceeded to fill up gas. replace cap back but wait, it doesn't snap into place anymore. some locking mechanism inside of it must've fell off. looked around can't find it. can i just drive home w/o this? might get gas leak? many thoughts come to mind. ah wait a minute. i got duct tape in the trunk. so, duct taped the cap in place for the 160mi drive home. as soon as i drove off the gas station, another loud crack. looked thru my rearview mirror and see some plastic piece flew off the road. ah that must've been the locking mechanism. rats...

moral of the story: always carry a duct tape in your car.

fuel cap part# 996 201 241 03
$12 at my local dealer (hey a reasonably-priced porsche part!)

how bout you? have you got a duct tape story to tell?

Thumbs up

LOL! I've came close to doing the same. Often wondered if the gas cap could get lodged in between the fender and wheel. Good story!

My first Ferrari (85 308QV) door locking mechanism went out and the door wouldn't close. I had to drive it around with duct tape until the shop could get me an appointment. Lucky it was the pasenger side door.

Try not to run the car with the gas cap off, vehicle will think it has an evaporative emissions leak and throw a check engine light.

You must be so tired after TH. Hope you had a great time.

Well, I don't have a duct tape story but once I almost drove off with the gas pump once - forgot to remove the gas pump handle. I was trying to get back to Infinion in my M3 and out of excitement I forgot to remove the pump handle. I was lucky that someone yelled at me as I was about to gun the car off the lot. It could easily caused some major damage.

Yep, surprised no CEL but no danger anyway... Funny story!

My duct tape experiences are too embarrassing to share.

that's what worried me the most, the CEL. i know on bmws if the cap is not put on right, the car goes into limp mode. and i had a long drive home.

yeah a lot of driving that weekend. arrived home ~1am drove from vegas (~600mi). woke up ~6am to go to TH (~160mi). tracked(~120mi). then drove back home(~160mi). but it was all worth it.

Sounds reasonable, but it is just a gas cap. Buy one for a Ford/Honda/Chevy, and you are probably going to pay $5.

My windshield wiper arm flew off on the freeway once. I had to put the passenger side onto the drivers side arm then took my sock, wrapped it around the passenger side wiper arm and duct taped it so it wouldn't fly off, that's my "duct tape fix it" story.

That's h i l a r i o u s! Good thing that it did not cause CEL to come on.

Me too, all these time I used to let the gas cap hang like that till last week when I was 'reviewing' the owner's manual and realized that there's a little 'hook' inside the gas door from which the gas cap can be suspended and away from the body...
