Need advise on 04 gt3 purchase

I have picked out an 04 gt3. Silver, 18000mi., ceramic brakes and most if not all options. He is second owner and is selling at avg. private sellers price (according to edmunds). Had ppi done and I was told several things about the car. 1- car has been tracked before (not a big deal but current owner states he has never tracked this car, I know him personally and have no reason not to believe but still was a surprise), 2-shocks and springs not original, seems to sit a little lower, 3-engine computer detected a previous issue with a cam on one bank, technician said it could be the cam solenoid bit not affecting engine at this time (1000$ fix), 4- clutch appears to have more wear than 18000mi of use (1500$ fix) 5-needs battery, and 6- needs two new rear tires. Are these relatively minor or expected problems? Should I run away or offer him 2 or 3 grand less. I really like the car but don't want to buy trouble. Thanx for your help.

The factory suspension can be lowered, so it could be stock. If for some reason it's not stock and somebody went trought the trouble of putting something better on then I would view that as a plus.
You should not have to pay more than very low $50's for the car you just described.

I don't know about your price. I'm thinking of selling my '05, 11K miles, extended warranty in force, new tires, iron brakes, cruise, bi-xenon, no issues, and I would probably expect mid $50's. Maybe that helps.

Your car is the best deal on the used 996 GT3 market right now. I can't beleive it has not sold yet.

6gt3 prices

It seems like prices are all over the place. According to edmunds it should sell for just under fifty k. The only catch is that they don't have the ceramic brake option to check off. Any ideas about the cam issue or the clutch? Thanx for your imput, still undecided.

Luckily I don't have to sell it to get the RS. I'll let it sit until it sells. I have one person looking at it this weekend.

I would personally not even look at that car with all of the other good clean cars that are currently available (like kscheible's red 04).

The car was actually sold to the first caller...then my local dealer took my RS allocation away. I PAID the purchaser $1000 to keep my car...thinking that I would never get an RS. I felt like crap and the buyer was kind of pissed....but we had no signed deal. He was going to pick it up that weekend. The funny part is that no one has even looked at the car since. Not 1 person. Its not like someone saying the car is crap after seeing it! Its really kind of amusing at this point. I was offered a decent trade on my recent M3 purchase, but decided not to. My son asked for it for his wedding gift....he get married next week. Guess what my answer was. LOL!

Wow, that Edmund's pricing is harsh! It seems that most priced under $50K have had some type of bodywork. The car shouldn't need a clutch at 18K unless it has been heavily tracked. You'll find quite a few nice examples if you add a few more thousand to your budget.

mo money

Yea, I thought about spending some more but finding the right car at the right price that I can see, drive and have inspected is a problem. I have no experience buying a used car from long distance. I really like the red gt3 of one member, kscheible but no a/c. If anyone knows of a good clean 04-05 for sale in Fl. please let me know. If this guy drops his price I might bite, otherwise I'll make a whopping 2% interest from the bank from the sale of my 06zo6. Thanx for all the info, everyone.

I see you had a Z06 also, then got a gt3. I just sold my C6z06 to get a gt3. You said you might want to sell the gt3. Curious as to why you want to sell it. Miss the torque? Moving up (newer gt3)? Problems with the gt3?

I bought the GT3 anticipating maintaining a regular track schedule. Seems I've lost some enthusiasm for the track, and have been considering selling the GT3 (did one track event with it last fall, and it was marvelous). But, every time I drive it, I think less about selling it! No problems with it at all. With the Euro GT3 seats, it is not a car in which my wife has any interest in riding, but she's never with me when I'm driving for fun anyway, which is what this car is all about. And I have the OE leather seats I can install if needed.

The low end torque of the ZO6 is an obvious difference, and I have a lot of respect for the car. But IMO, overall, the GT3 is a much more satisfying driver's car. Personally, I would not want one as a daily driver, but that's personal preference. As a practical matter, a 997S would probably be a better car for me. But, once you spend some time in a GT3, it's really hard to go back, unless you simply need the amenities. So, I remain on the fence, but it's not an altogether unpleasant fence!
