Do I need a GT3?
Your tests for an Rx
I think there is a secret society of GTx owners who may be trying (wittingly or unwittingly) to sway some of our members away from these great cars. 
So, a few things:
None of us 'need' a Porsche of any type the answers you seek do no lie there;
In most locations, Porsches (997x series) make perfectly fine DD's. But they are terrible as your 'only' car. The occasional trip with your dog or retrieving compost from Home Depot requires a car about which you care a great deal less.
But since you owned a 997 ask yourself:
Did you often or generally find it too rough or too loud a drive? (not occasionally, but quite often).
Do you live to lug? That is, do you like to accelerate and/or cruise in the 9 o'clock segment of the tach
When the weather turns, or worse yet, all of the time, do you yearn for a 'steer by wire' drivetrain design? That is, utter resistance to slippage, automated brake and throttle control, or the slitly numb feel that AWD generates?
If the answer to all or most of these questions is 'well heck yes!' then exit the GTx section of this forum and head to the 997/plain or the Cayenne section of the thread to meet your peers. If not, no matter how far from the track you plan to stay, you are clinically ready for a GT3 or RS.
Walk, do not run to your dealer.
The only thing that has delayed me to date is giving up my convertible body style in the CA Bay Area. That's a very tough call...

I am going through the same thing. I have a 09 C2S that i love. I got it a few months ago and now as my DD i have just over 4k on it. My friend at my local dealership has a GT3 and a GT2rs on the way. The problem is my name is on both site unseen.

If I had a 997.2 C2S already, and were looking GT3, I would first get the Sport Chassis springs and PASM shock controllers and retrofit them, if the car wasn't ordered that way. Europeans supposedly love the "minus 20" option Porsche has given them since the 997 intro. It's a significant stiffness jump for 997.2's, and ~$1,000 give or take (call Champion). Rear springs go from 56NM to 65NM (95 progressive). If that weren't firm enough, I'd consider switching costs and a GT3, whose springs are around 105NM in back (maybe someone will true that up). The mod also takes the C2S down 20mm vs the 30mm for GT3, from the stock 997 tub (again, please true up if wrong).
As far as engine? Have you driven/ridden in one? Its a different animal. There would be something wrong, IMO, if a C2S 3.8 and a GT3 3.6 both wore "911" on the back. Even if the same power, very different engines, very different cars. In my drive of both (3.8 7.1 track, 7.2 street, GT3 7.1 street plus pssgr on track) I actually found the GT1 motor more usable on the street with the lower end torque missing. Sure, clutch firm, notchy shift gate, but california rolls and sub-50mph 3rd gear cruising were nothing for this engine and because you're out of the 5-8k RPM band, not a lot of danger either. I guess having owned a 3.2 for ~100k miles I'm used to and expect all the power up high in a 911.
What I know won't grow on me is the ~2000RPM drumming thorughout the whole cabin and saying to myself "you knew what you were getting yourself into" every time I approach stop n go traffic. My arm doesn't need to be twisted for PDK. I just cancelled on a C2S PDK and am looking at 997.1 GT3s. VERY hard decision. Track ~6 days per year. Good luck.

Road, Track, Doing a drive, having a blast to the office, its all good. You can do anything you want in the GT3...Its yours so you make your own rules and use for it!
