This action is due to possible premature hub wear. We did have a vehicle that showed some signs of wear but have performed replacement on several cars with no wear. Some of the cars had been on the track before inspection but we usually go over the cars before they get to the track.

And yes...you have to stand on the brake to perform this...

A GT3 lost a rear wheel at Mont-Tremblant this weekend

Yes, another failure of the (now) famous centerlock story.

A driver exited the corner 7 at Mont-Tremblant during a PCA event on three wheels. It was even taken by a photographer (Who refuses to put online!).

The event happened after the driver made the recall. So is it just bad luck? I don't think so! By introducing a single point of failure in a critical part, Porsche is taking a huge responsibility. Many drivers are changing wheels very often at the track without the proper knowledge, time or tools.

I just hope Porsche offers an option on the next ones. Five lugs wheels....

This is interesting and concerning. Noone is tightening these properly where the spring loads all the way out. My guess.

this just highlights how what seems like a good marketing idea becomes a disaster when reality reaches the general public...I sure loved the look of the centerlock wheels when they came out as I am sure everyone does...but when I heard of the necessary torque/grease procedure I coudln't help but think about how often I have the wheels off of my car and what a major PITA those wheels would be and that was without any concerns for safety...now that these wheels are falling off and hubs are failing I'm very glad I stuck with my 5 lugs that I can torque after every session and be reasonably sure that I won't be singing "you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel"

Well, I think it just shows that Porsche did not design the centerlocks with the idea that their customer would drive them on slicks and change tires 3-4 times a day, or even more most owners don't put the dust cover back in place after changing the wheels (Picking up water/sand/dust in the lock mechanism!).

Whenever you have to develop a procedure that a properly trained technicians has trouble following or finds confusing, how can you expect an owner to do it without risking his life (or others!).

On Cup cars, the parts are made of steel and you have to change the nuts and studs every year or so! How can someone believe that the soft alloy used for the centerlocks will not be overtstressed or damaged with time? At what time should you change the hub and nut?

I'll be very careful when I see a centerlock equipped car around me on the track....

How can I tell if my car has been recalled? I asked the dealer and they say they didn't see anything in the computer. So they couldn't tell me if anything was done or needed to be done. Someone here said the torque value should not be on the centerlock nut if the new nut was installed. Mine still have the 500 nm on them, which has me concerned.

Periokid,

if you see the numbers on the nuts, you din't have the recall. I'm surprised the dealer doesn't have a record on file....

On the other hand, if you're not tracking the car or changing your tires two times a day, I wouldn't be too concerned...

It's difficult that owners aren't able to easily & cost effectively check the torque as regular torque wrenches do not read that high. We find more cars than we would imagine to be overtorqued from the dealer.

We chose to purchase a LARGE digital torque wrench from Snap-On (~$1000) to ensure that we are at spec when working on cars with centerlocks. For the Carrera GT, we have the torque multiplier which is a different fitment due to wheel design.

If anyone is feeling uneasy and are local to us, please feel free to stop by for us to double check your wheels.

This is unacceptable. Call another dealer. The proper torque setting is 440 foot/pound, with the recalled nut.

Wheels should be torqued with an appropriate torque wrench and with the wheels OFF the ground.

Only cars built before October 2010 have the recall. The ones built afterwards have the "newer" hardware/hub and may still say 500 nM on CL. Mine was built in Nov. 2010, still has the 500 nM on it, and is NOT recalled. And, yes, I track...lots.

I have a 2011 RS and the recall applied. Champion Porsche replaced all four center locks.

Interesting...funny how the information varies from dealer to dealer and region to region. I saw the actual Porsche technical bulletin... Maybe it's also VIN specific.

It for sure does. I was the first at my dealer to have it done. In fact they didn't even know about the recall until I told them about what I read here when this thread started. I called porsche North Am and the informed the dealer which they would have done in the following couple weeks. I track my car too and its incredible how its all over the web and the dealer knows nothing. Even if PNA hadn't told them anything they should be out there online on the forum seeing what people are talking about. I was dissappointed in my dealer is one of the biggest in NA.
