996 GT3 takes on E92 M3 "Frozen" Special Edition
996 GT3 takes on E92 M3 "Frozen" Special Edition (with video)
The M3 Frozen is a South Africa only limited edition which has an increased power output of 330 kw (vs 309 Kw of standard model). This is achieved through an AC Schnitzer exhaust and manifold and ECU remap. The car also comes with a distinct matte black or grey paint job.
The car looks awaesome and the sound is incredible, possibly one of the best sounding cars i've heard, especially on the downshifts with throttle blips, it sounds EVIL!!!
We put my 996 GT3 mkII (with only 280 Kw) up against it and, well, lets just say the GT3 left it for dead. We did standstill to 200 km/h and rolling races in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. In all instances, the GT3 pulled the Frozen by significant margins.
Even from standstill, where the M3 utilized its launch control feature, i was able to beat it off the line.
We have loads of vids, i will post them soon! Great to know that a 2004 model GT3 with only 280Kw can still take on the latest tech paddle-shifters with 330Kw in a straight line.

both
I own both a 2008 E92 M3 DCT and 2005 GT3 (yes, I am happy about this).
M3 - best daily driver ever, fast, safe, under the radar a bit, can not say enough.
GT3 - Oh yea, it's raw and lurking. It does feel lighter, mine has a few mods but also a radio and AC so not totally hard core.
Track - M3 just does what you want it to and very fast. GT3, only about a dozen track days, still figuring it out. Weight transfer is so dynamic and power application so hard on it's a bit of work.
If I ran timed, M3 today would probably be 10% faster, for me. Once I'm ready, GT3 will slam it for sure.
Nothing like hitting redline 2,3 into 4 in the GT to make things feel fun!
Anyhow, both are a 10 in my book.
And yes, winter is coming, back to the Toyota truck (sob)

I always find these Porsche v. BMW postings amusing, with each group’s prejudice clearly evident in the responses. I had a 2005 GT3, and now have a 2011 M3, and previously owned several other cars of each label, and a lot of track experience in all. These are both great cars, but in very different categories. After learning to drive the GT3, I expect I would be a bit faster on most tracks, but not by much. In my experience, the GT3 is a car in which you feel faster than you are sometimes. And the M3 is on the other side for me, usually producing lap times faster than I would guess. I suppose that should not be a surprise, since part of the attraction the GT3 is the manner in which it engages the driver, actually, demanding of the driver. The balance of the M3 makes it an easier car to drive near the limit, although you have to shut off the stability control, which it really doesn’t need anyway.
I don’t doubt the results posted here and in other similar posts. But in my experience, and assuming two comparably prepared cars, I would be very much closer in my performance results than those discussed here. Maybe that is due to a driving deficiency on my part, something certainly not unknown.

BMW and Porsche
Agree both camps seem to tee it up a bit. Having attended events of both clubs, my take is everyone is cut from the same page, meaning appreciation of performance and engineering. The recent M3 I think kicked it up a notch to meet 911 standards and you know, Porsche has to answer as well.
My plan is to sort of keep the GT3 as my track day car more or less (this is street legal registered stock on street tires not a trailer deal), M3 daily driver. When the M3 goes off warranty, I might start building it a bit. At that point, who knows. My 12 yo figures I'll be bored of these cars by the time he gets his permit ( what he does not know yet is that is mom's Volvo is probably what he gets for awhile to learn in). And I did like my Subaru wagon, so........
Anyhow, thanks for the reply - agreed on all points.

........classic example. favorite quote "...because we all know that the GT3RS is such a beast in straight line acceleration."

While the results were no surprise, the Frozen Edition M3 is not ONLY available in South Africa (30+ also came to the U.S.) and it doesn't come with AC Schnitzer exhaust and manifold. Just sayin'

However the E92 M3 and 996 GT3 are very much peers. I think the 996 GT3 is still ultimately faster. Modern BMW's just do not put power down very well, and for their weights, the tires are awefully skimpy.
