Tires for 2007 GT3
Tires for 2007 GT3
Please I know this subject gets covered all of the time but......opinions and shared experience is what these forums are all about so I'm hoping for some feedback on tires.
Situation; GT3, 2007 will track and autocross (mostly) with most miles coming on the street. Will not buy a second set of wheels, at least this year so the tires have to be capable of holding their own in both environments. Old guy that I am I am not looking for the ultimate "stiction" just something that will give me pleasure and do a competent job. Being a GT3 I don't want something that is a squirmy side wall and I do value the feel at turn-in of good (make that GREAT) tires....
Here are my choices boiled down so far:
1. B'stone RE11, had them or their equivalent then on my old 993. A good tire as I recall.
2. Hankook Ventus? I don't know something about what Larry the Cable guys says; "on a GT3, that just ain't right"......but maybe I should consider? No direct experience of my own.
3. Michelin MPSC, I had these on my 996TT (lamented selling it) and they were a fine tire but I always was a little queasy about putting a lot of street miles on them. I don't know why they never let me down and I drove all the way to Death Valley and back on them.......but another $600 over the B'stones (and that money could go for dedicated track wheels at some stage).
4. Yokahoma Advan, again had them on the 996TT, a great tire actually liked them a lot.
Okay give it up, give my your opinions, my wheels are HRE just repaired for a small fortune. Mrs. Cooper says no new wheels for a while or your sleeping in the garage, and it's winter.....

Of your list, the MPSC will offer the most dry traction and best performance, I don't know how much rain y'all see, but if this is your DD then they might not be your best option. Michellin also just released their new Pilot Super Sport, but I'm not sure of all sizes they offer. In your situation I would check out the Super Sports then compare prices to the RE-11's. I've only had experience with those and the MPSC, but I was happy with the RE-11's when I had them.
It's not my DD, we don't see much rain........well until this year! But this is SoCal so in the great climatic scheme of things not much.
Any news on when the Pilot Super Sport will see the light of day and be available for us Proletariat?

I bought the Hankook Ventus for my car (7 GT3). They are fine for DD but I can definitely tell a difference from the Michelin PSC's. They are not as good or sticky but I suspect they will last longer. I will get the RE 11's next and try them. I track my car with slicks and if you don't do a lot of track time they will last a little while but give you the most satisfaction for your time. I can't justify buying the Michelins either. I don't drive the car to the limit on the street so cheap tires are fine for me.
re-11's for sure. my mpsc's lasted only 5k miles. did a lot of research and came up with the re-11's. have had them on now for about 12k miles and they work great, both dry and wet. and the price is very right.

it is cheaper to get separate wheels - get either CCW in NB gt3 sizes (18", 9"front 12"rear - $3K) or 18" OZ allegeritas in 8.5"f 12"r ($1.6K).
then get set of toyo ra1 tires in 245/305 or 245/335.
for street DD tires you would want something with decent wet traction, none of good high performance r-comps are good in wet. RE11 are ok tires for street but after you try r-comps for sport you will never look back. having second set of rims helps a lot.
if you want to stick in pure stock class in auto-x for non r-comps you can use pzeros, hankooks r-s3 or imho best - direzza z1 star spec.

I'm not sure these 18" wheels will clear my brakes. There is an aftermarket set of Brembo's on the car. The reason I had to sell my 18" Porsche 996 C4S wheels was because they didn't clear my brakes. A new set of wheels is not part of the "post-nuptial" agreement for the time being and California being a community property state I don't want to breach that contract...............maybe later in the year.
I think I'm leaning toward the RE-11's for now then. I would like to hear when Michelin will release the new Pilot Sports for general sale.
Thanks for the comments.

19" has considerably less choices and tires cost much more than 18". you`ll see.

RE11 is an OK tire for auto-x, better than current ps2.
Thanks utinpol, yes the 19" tire prices have gotten my attention!
Good feedback on the RE11 versus ps2.......I have ps2 on the car now, lots of tread left but old and about the equivalent flex of wood so that it was I'm replacing.
Still RE11 has the inside track now.

Can't really help much for comparisons. When I bought the 07 Gt3 it had the MPSC on there but they were the original set and absolutely terrible due to being heat cycled.
Immediately replaced with the RE-11's and love them.
But, use R-6's on the track. Difference in handling is worth a seperate set of wheels.

I have had a few sets of MPSC's and hate them. Handling is brutal in the wet, OK in the dry. I have had Advan's and they are a good all around tire IMO, but not that great on the track when compared to an R Compound. Have you considered Toyo 888?
