New Trailer for my 997.1 GT3 RS

After some contemplation, availability, and pricing, I decided to go with a Featherlite 3110-0017 trailer. With the use of Race Ramps TR-5's, the front spoiler just clears the transition to the trailer ramps.

I wasn't really crazy about Featherlite's solution for a tire rack, so I decided to call Trailex and they customized the width of one of theirs in order to fit the dimensions I provided. I liked how the Trailex has an adjustable height/config.

Installation was pretty straightforward - drilled 8 holes per side with 3/8" stainless hardware for connections.

I also purchased some 1.5" square aluminum stock (3' length) from McMaster and attached those as tire stops (SS hardware as well).

Here are some pics and hope this helps anyone else looking for a trailer solution for the .1 GT3RS.

Very nice. I have pretty much the same set up, but your trailer is a little shinier than mine! How did you attach the tire stops?

Off topic....but how are you getting your pics to show up as other than thumbnails???

Nice! Lookup 'sanitary clamps' on ebay and you will find SS 1"-1.5" clamps for $10 each. I'm using starboard pieces to push up against the inside of the wheels.

As far as the images, I host them on flickr and just paste the link into the message.

Thanks!

What are starboard pieces? If possible I would like to see a picture of your set up? Also for OP, can you fit two sets of tires on your tire rack?

Thx.

This is King Starboard. It's a hard plastic used for many applications. Can be machined like wood.

I'm still waiting on my clamps, but here's what I bought:

I have yet to try to place 2 sets on the rack. I'll measure it up on Saturday and let you know.

I can tell you right now that assuming standard GT3 tire sizes, 2 sets will not fit. Even if you have the wider-spec 3110 model that measures 80" between fenders, doing the quick math based on wheel widths alone (not even taking into account actual widths with tires) leaves you short. I had a similar issue with my trailer, so I just threw the wheels that didn't fit in the tow vehicle

Thanks! And your tow vehicle technique will probably be put into play once I get another set. Thanks for the heads up.

Update - the Sanitary Clamps were too big. Plan B - 1" Weight Bar Clamps. Plan C - PVC Pipe cut to length that has 1.3-1.5" I.D..

Here are some updated and better pics. Went with 1 1/4" thick walled PVC with small squares of starboard. Works like a charm and holds the wheels just where I want them. So the Featherlite / Trailex Tire Rack combo works like a charm. Hope this helps anyone considering a trailer solution.

Ended up raising the tires on the rack by 3". It was just a little too close to the hood - around 6 inches... I'm more comfortable with the clearance now.

Thats the proper way to roll.. Also you guys who tie the car by the wheels should consider getting tow hooks under the car like rennline sells because strapping it that way can easily pull the alignment out of spec.. Congrats!!!

Mike

Agree with tow hooks. Opinions go both ways on this but I got the rennline tow hooks. Guys who prefer wheel tiedowns also say their wheels never get scratched but i don't see how this is possible after a track day when the wheels are filthy.

I just spent an hour acid washing my trailer to get it lookin more like yours!
