Looking at a 996 GT3; opinions, please!

Just looked and drove a 2004 996 GT3 today in Speed Yellow, full black leather interior, yellow seat belts, yellow center console and no more options. It came with yellow gauges that the present owner had replaced, at the Porsche dealer he bought it from because, in his opinion, they made the car look cheap. I happen to like the black gauges it has now, so that is not an issue, unless the car had been clocked (odometer rolled back somehow). Beautiful car with stock suspension and drives just as smoothly as my brother's 2010 GT3 and feels more compliant than my 997S in sport mode; yes, it truly is daily drivable!

The car has 28,900 miles and the paint is perfect- there are very subtle signs that the front bumper has been resprayed at some point though it is nicely done. The car has no 3M film on it. The operating hours are about 836 per my Durametric scan so it corresponds to roughly 35 mph average. It has 0 type/range 2 revs but has 10,000 plus type/range 1 revs. Is this a run away from it scenario? The present owner has had it for 4 years and bought it CPO. He states he's never tracked it but only done one autox.

I intend to do a thorough PPI but only if I get a consensus that the car is ok to buy, given a clean PPI, based on what I wrote about the ECU scan and my first impressions as to its visual condition.

What do you guys think? Your impressions are welcome!

type 1 overrevs are when you run up to redline. so you can conceive it happens a lot, but 10,000 times is pretty high. he'd have to have wrung it out to redline that many times, which means he regularly does it, which means track (to me)

^^^ I believe the type I overrevs indicate the number of spark ignitions above the redline, not the number of times the redline was hit. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You are 100% correct. 10,000 is the number of ignitions at red line. No big deal IMO. Depending on the price and a PPI, this sounds like a good car.

No big deal, these GT1 blocks are race engines. I would be more concerned with the synchros and LSD then a few over revs. People put way too much emphasis on the DME scan. When I traded my C2S in, it had 65,000 level 1+2's...and it stops counting at 65,000!

BTW, I forgot to mention something. The ECU gave me two codes that are P1325 Porsche fault code 901 (inlet camshaft bank 2) and Pxxx1 Porsche code 900 (inlet camshaft bank 1). Sorry about the second Pxxx1 number as I cannot make out what the three numbers that follow the P are but it is a similar code to the one for inlet camshaft bank 2.

What do these mean? The owner has no idea those codes were there as he says he has had no problems with the car. We took it on a test drive and it drives perfectly. He says he had done exhaust modifications prior to putting the stock exhaust on the car and that he had to move the car a few feet with only one side of the exhaust installed for a brief moment. It doesn't sound to me like this is the cause so I ask, maybe some of you would know. I'll ask my mechanic tomorrow but maybe someone can shed some light before I get to make that call.

Thanks!

How many miles did your car have at trade in time, if it's ok to ask?

If I remember correctly there's 410 ignitions at the 8200 rev limit (lower gears)

That means the car has spent approx. 24 seconds at redline in it's life.

If he was an Auto-x guy they love to ride the limiter instead of shifting.

24 seconds in Range 1 would not worry me personally.

Andy
