Helmet recommendations

I am looking for the best and lightest helmet available since I will be tracking my car soon...I also plan to use a head restraint system for obvious reasons. It is my opinion that the violent forces the head sustains during impact, fore and aft and side to side is a major cause of fatalities during crashes even though the cockpit's integrity remains after the crash. I have been looking at simpson along with their helmet restraint system..

any other quality lightweight helmet mfg's to consider other than Bell ? Thanks

you need to try on the helmets

each persons head really lends itself to a particular helmet. Then add the hans device

Hey Chris,

I used a Simpson helmet for a few years. After that I bought a Bell which is much nicer IMO. Try on a few different makes and models and see what fits your head the best. If possible, find an area shop that knows how helmets should fit...

As far as H&N restraints... I use the Hans device with no problems. The Issac system seems pretty popular with others, but I am not keen on being attached to the seatbelts. All the pro racers I see running ALMS and Grand AM use the Hans device. Whatever system you choose is better than nothing, but those stap systems are a joke IMO.

I use a Bieffe, which I like but is a tad on the expensive side, especially if you dont get a chance to use it much. Arai is a good choice as well. Most important thing is to get a helmet that you feel comfortable in and can leave on for hours while concentrating. ope this helps.

Easy custom pad fit to a standard shell. Gotta love Stand 21!

Thanks Watt and Roland. I now remember you guys talking about the stands. There are no dealers near me to try on. With the stand, can you get the basic size based on measurment then buy these custom fit pads ?

I tried on a number of different helmets and settled on a Bell. Not that I think you would, but don't get a motorcycle helmet as those are designed for a different type of impact than the SA rated helmets.

I don't have a HANS, but use a neck collar instead. Something to think about as often you need to get ready in a hurry.

Rocket,

Do a search and you will probably find a dealer. I was able to locate a dealer in the LA area and got fitted in fifteen minutes. Really worth the effort!

Cheers,

Fitment is the key

Try on as many helmets as possible, then pick the one that fits the best. I went helmet shopping with the intent of settling on a Bell M2 and ended up getting an Arai GP5-K ($$$) because the fit compared to other helmets was night and day. This included helmets by Bell, Simpson, Stand 21, Bieffe and Sparco. Most if not all helmets you will try can be fitted with a HANS device; I have seen prices run from $800 to $1500.

$940 for the economy, $1200 for the pro model. You can't put a price on safety...

Agreed. I can just see myself at my first DE at the Glen this October. Me in a GT3, Helmet, Hans device, 5 or 6 pt harness and a nomex suit. Some people may laugh, especially since I am just begining this journey. All I can say, especially after Ben's tragedy... "you can't be protected enough". Keeping my head stable in the event of impact along with giving myself more time to get out the car in the event of fire(nomex suit) is the important thing. **** the naysayers....

What about fire suppression system?

A really good idea! I run full systems on my Ruf as well as my daily driver M5. Both have cages too!
