Considering GT2
Considering GT2
I've been more or less set on a 997 GT3 for a while now. Had a slight hiccup where I thought the TT might be a better option for me but soon got over that when I had a go - found it to be souless and didn't make me smile.
I'm now considering the GT2. Any owners past or present here I'd appreciate your views. Why did you buy over 3 / TT and was it the right choice. All others opinion welcome.
The car will be used purely for pleasure on the road. Will need the ability to pop to shops or go a motorway run for weekend away with Mrs. Must, and I stress MUST, have the ability to make me smile until my face is sore.

Any Porasche will provide perma-grin for the right owner. If you feel the Turbo is soulless, maybe a Porsche isn't for you. Nobody's opinion or experience will help you pick a car. Look at as many as you can and and decide which one is for you. Maybe look at a GT3. There's nothing "soulless" there.
I've had a 6GT2 with about 700hp and now a 7GT3. The GT3 is more fun. The GT2 is crazy fast, but it doesn't have the sound or soul of the GT3. It's also WAY to easy to hit 150mph on the highway in just a few seconds.
I'm just now chillin at a hotel after a trackday at The Ridge.
I came by my 08 GT2 by chance as I was looking for 3RS. The deal was sweet and only a bit more than I would pay for a 3RS.
Having driven both the ride is similar but power delivery is different. The 3 has a livelier throttle response but does not have the pull of the 2. It is brutal. The 3 sounds better IMHO.
Btw I loaded up and dropped of my kid at school, made the 5 hour drive to the track (at 27 US mpg!!!) and today I was tooling along at 242kmh as observed by my passenger. More was on tap but this was my first here. Ahem...multiply by 5 and divide by 8 for my non-metricated friends.
Just ran the stock MPSC 34/37 hot.
You will not go wrong if ya brought one home.
Cheers...

2008 Porsche 911 GT2 for Sale in Houston, TX 77024
GT2 would be the way to go if money is no option. This yellow one in Houston is a rare find with 1,800 miles.
The GT3 is very affordable @ under $90K; not to mention you may be able to get an extended warranty through Porsche of Colorado Springs.

I have an 08 GT2. I bought it 2 years ago and it was CPOd and I have about another year on the warranty. My car is black on black with black wheels and black deviating stitching.
I had an 08 TT and drove a 997.1 GT3 RS before buying the GT2. I absolutely love this car. It really is in the category of an exotic but I really love it for the way that it drives. Acceleration is amazing, handling without the heavy front differential is great. The GT3RS had a sweeter sounding exhaust but the feel of the turbo is just amazing. This could be a real long keeper for me. I don't think there is anything out there that is much better than this car. Go for it, you will love it.

I was cross shopping a 997.2 GT3RS, 997.2 TTS, or a 997.1 GT2. I immediately ruled out the TTS as I found it boring and I had a lot of experience with my buddies 997.1 TT manual modified to 650hp, it did not make me
.
The 3RS was very thrilling and as other mentioned the 2 was just as thrilling but in different ways. They both have a very visceral communicative drive, and they are both very quick. The 3RS feels peppier and sounds amazing. The 2 can accelerate at levels which not only make me
but also make me
.
For 7k you can get the car to 2RS levels which is a huge difference from stock, then you can spend another 7k to get a full susupension set up which will be better then the 2RS. I also needed to add a new race light flywheel clutch, which can handle the extra power.
There is no ferrari that I would prefer, and I have driven them all on the track.
The 2 or the 3RS is the way to go if you want a huge

Thank you for all the replies lads.
I drove two GT2s at weekend and a GT3.2.
They're both amazing cars but the 2 made me smile most by quite a bit. My girl said I could barely speak after my run!
Didn't really drive either hard and was changing about 4k on GT2 as even at that your going fast. Does the power tail off or does it just keep pulling.
For what its worth, I already have two cars that are n/a and high revving so I'm thinking it'd be nice for a change. Never had a turbo'd car.
Ps. I am in Scotland, UK

They're both great cars. For your intended use the GT2 wins hands down. It's eminently sophisticated at street legal speeds; and brutally quick without needing to get into high RPM's (read "waking up the neighbors"). Should you have the inclination, non-internal mods/upgrades make it faster than almost any exotic you care to mention. And it's rare. One sees relatively few of them out there. Good luck - it's hard to lose whichever you decide to go with.
Hi Bryce
I have a 996 GT2, black on black. It is easy to upload a software update that will allow more boost and quicker throttle response, allowing boost up to 1.2 bar with the stock turbos. You will read all kinds of dyno horsepower numbers, but unless cars are tested on the same dyno on the same day within minutes of each other, comparisons are not truly comparable due to variance in dynos, some read higher or lower than others, temp and air density, altitude, operator, etc. I don't pay much attention to hp claims for these aforementioned reasons.
Although many love to claim their cars output 700 hp, I find that on street legal tires, this level is hp is wasted. My car already has more power than traction in 1st gear and sometimes 2nd gear. I can tell you that I have no problem passing Vipers and Corvettes at the racetrack on the straights.
I think your question about the soul of a car is interesting. The GT2 will mock you and make you question your soul. The car has performance that requires skills, passion, courage and judgement. You will find yourself questioning your own driving skills and self -doubt will creep in, wondering if you are good enough to drive this car. Let me put that question to rest, if you are a pro racer then yes, if not then reality is that your driving skills are not good enough to drive this car at its limits, which are immense. Every time I drive my GT2 I have to do an attitude check before I start the motor, it is a serious experience. The car has more soul than the driver. She is also a killer ***** that you cannot take for granted. I can't think of another super car that I would rather own than my GT2.

I agree 100%. I have driven all of my prior cars at their limits, Porsche 930 modified, BMW M3, BMW M5, multiple Corvettes, 993TT, 997TT modified and have done many track events and Skip Barber racing courses and without a doubt, my GT2 is way beyond my skill levels.
I agree also about the ability to increase performance. A simple GIAC upgrade increases it tremendously but truthfully, when I first got the GT2 about 2 years ago, I thought that I would wait until I got bored with it and then do the GIAC to get me stimulated again. I still don't feel like I need that upgrade, the car is just so amazing just as it is.
