new 997 gt3 owner..first impressions
let me start by saying that i currently own a 700+hp 996 turbo that i truly enjoy, but it is a handful on the track due to the extra weight. That is why i decided to purchase a used 2007 GT3 to be my track and street car. i found a clean 6k miles car with carbon brakes and a factory roll bar. The GT3 looks amazing and sounds awesome, but it isn't very satisfying when you point it in a straight line and open up the throttle. I originally planned on selling my 996 Turbo when i purchased the GT3, but i dont think the GT3 with scratch the power itch that still have.
i sure hope that the Gt3 is more satisfying on the track. i dont regret the purchase, but i was hoping for something more exciting.
has anyone felt the same way about a GT3 ???
i really want to love this GT3 , but im not there yet..

You can do the math. Despite the weight difference the HP difference of 415 hp with the GT3 cannot give you the oomph (and rush) of your modified turbo. The GT3 is a momentum car and it's prowess is in the curves and carving up corners. Keep them both if you can and drive them both on the track. Some coaching with your GT3 may help to maximize this cars strengths and accelerate your enjoyment.
You can make your Turbo a very capable track weapon but you will need to put it on a weight loss program to shed 250lbs or so and put $15-20k into it to overhaul the suspension, brakes, LSD, etc. You will end up with a car that few GT3s will touch..

a GT3 will never give the instant hit of acceleration and thrill on road as a more powerful car can deliver but it may be better the better track weapon. I beleive Op is saying an on highway one hit burst of acceleration... the GT3 does lack the accelarative force the turbo etc give and I for one miss this.
thank you for all of your comments. luckily TPC Racing is located in my back yard so I will be having my suspension set up this week. I plan to get to the track this month and I hope that the improved turning and braking can make up for the loss in power that im used to from my turbo.
I remember when a 400+hp car was unheard of and now I actually think this car is rather slow...us car guys have really been spoiled.
there is a reason that everyone is so crazy about these gt3 cars and I just need to get on the track to experience it.
here is a picture of my new to me gt3.

GT3 is for people who really love to drive! I joke about it being a momentum car but most people don't understand that unless they are also car guys and used to big horsepower cars. It was a bit of a transition for me coming from a 996TT to adapt to the powerband, and it caught me out a few times before I realized I couldn't drive 'lazy' and rely on the torque to save me.
However, all that being said...the GT3 is the car that really gets your blood pumping when you drive it properly. It's so much more visceral and involving than a 996TT (short of one with crazy levels of modification). These are just fantastic cars overall, but if you're a straight line power kind of guy then it will disappoint a bit.

try going from a tuned 996 turbo to a c2s! yes the power difference is just not even on the same level but i appreciate the improved chassis and reduced weight. I did not get a full leather car so my interior is not quite to my liking but a few upgrades will get me there!
i am yet to do an aggressive alignment on the car, once that is dialed in i am sure the c2s will be a finomialcar for the money - 35k less than a gt3!

I'm new to this, with the only two cars I've tracked (outside of a Richard Petty Driving Experience when I was too young to know better) being a McLaren MP4-12C (my first track experience) and my new 997.2 GT3.
I gotta tell you, the McLaren is an awesome car, and goes a long way toward making drivers look better than they are. But the GT3 is, for me, lots more fun. I've owned a number of high performance cars, and I think this GT3 (which I bought used) may be the best value and most fun of any of them.

This. I just purchased a 997.2 GT3 last week. 4500 miles, cream puff car. In the low $100s, these cars are a value/bargain comparable to other Porsches or other high-end sports cars. Last of an era in many ways. Last stick-only Porsche, last Mezger engine, etc. A new C2S, which is on every corner, and driven by many local soccer moms in PDK is more expensive.
And just fast in straight line is easy. Gets boring after awhile. By a boosted Porsche, or an AMG, etc. and there you go. Just sold my Black Series for the same reason, not exciting after awhile. The GT3 is a scalpel.
