I have a feeling that what are you seeing is what you will get on the final release.

Those changes, alone, would account for a good bit of weight.
Hmm so lets see, i have no wiper, no sunroof, exhaust no cats.. What should my car weigh around approx?? And also a lighter battery is a cheap way to shed some lbs also

Oh yeah, I forgot about those things (all of which I have done), although I do have a sunroof (gotta have that).

Yea sunroof is cool, but even in my M3 i did the CF roof and deleted the sunroof for weight savings, i never really use it anyway

I'm wondering whay this car still had camo around the front lights... I mean if it was a car photographed by the press, why not remove it? But I agree that besides that, the photos show the final product.

i, for one, am glad w/ my 996tt purchase. admittedly, the 997tt is better than i expected, and perfomance should be pretty good, but i think the 996tt is just a slightly better looking car that has already been proven to handle sufficient hp.

I agree...plus replace the OEM dual mass flywheel with a lightweight flywheel - saves another +17lbs!! (and the throttle response is like night and day different).

My car's currently down to 3463 lbs with a full tank of gas.

For those, concerned about performance, I wouldn´t worry. The 996TT X50 and S both had a claimed power of 450 HP, but can still hang with and beat both the F430 and the Gallardo. With a nominal horsepower increase of 25 HP, a much better power curve and improved aerodynamics, I don´t think the car will be any sort of slouch.
If it helps to understand, Porsche now owns 18,5% of VW, which own Audi, which owns Lamborghini. To help the relatively stagnant sales of the Gallardo (and with a facelift coming this year), Porsche have probably decided to keep the horsepower figure lower (this is based on rumors).

Why would a company (Porsche) hobble its flagship (911 turbo) so its 18.5% stake in a company (VW) that has a stake in a company (Audi), which has a stake in a company (Lamborghini) that produces a indirect competitor (Gallardo) be protected from the competition of the flagship? - do you cripple the 95% to help the 5%?

Porsche is in very high-strung relations with VW right now. Piech actually stood down to calm VW´s board and get them to accept Wiedeking getting on board with another Porsche executive. They don´t want to seem like they´re the aggressors, because what Porsche is hoping for is strategic partnership in development and parts. They don´t want to jeopardize that. Thing is, the 911 Turbo sells, people buy it for its name. With the stellar performance it will be offering, that is ensured. Lambo, on the other hand, not having much luck with its Gallardo, is relying a lot on this new facelift. If the 997TT beats it on all fronts (it will be the better car, no doubt about it, but it shouldn´t destroy the Gallardo), Lambo has just wasted millions on development.
