Yup, just like mooty said, the reason the clutch is rattling is because its a single mass light weight fly wheel.

But.....the dealer can fix it by giving him a heavier dual-mass flywheel.

Always wondered, why does the single mass LWF setup make noise? What's actually rattling? TIA

Engine will not idle as smooth with light flywheel. I like that sound myself.

Yes, I notice this rattle when the clutch peddle is not depressed at idle.

Just the other day it was doing the opposite on me. It was not making the rattling noise when the clutch was out. Started rattling hard when clutch was in. The gears were also not slipping in place as easy.

What could have caused this? I dropped the car off at the dealership this morning to get checked out...

Thanks,

Q

It is the intermediate shaft in the transmission . The clearances and gear lash .
That is why when you depress the clutch the noise stop as that shaft stops spinning.

The dual Mass FW absorbs that vibration ,but it is heavy and has a lot rotational mass.

Hope that clears it up for you.
