After 3 replaced lip spoilers my friend finally cracked his bumper badly. And with the overhang of the GT3 and the roads we have in Athens it seems inevitable to avoid happening again. Rather than giving up driving the car he thought that he should do something about ground clearance. Buying a used bumper off a 997S that upgraded to aerokit or GT3 bumper seems tempting. Is it possible?

It would be weird seeing a GT3 with a normal bumper tho...

 

if u take the lip off of the GT3 bumper it's actually about the same height as the regular C2 bumper. having said that if he puts a C2 bumper on GT3 he will most likely crack the bumper again. the car itself is much lower than the C2 so i don't think replacing the bumper will solve his problem. i don't know about the road condition in Athens but seems like be more careful is a the only way to go?

 

Maybe you could put higher springs .. the GT3 gods wouldn't be happy tho.

 

If he is having problems with the front bumper and splitter scarping he can set the ride height to a tarmac spec which actually raises the vehicle almost an inch over stock.
It may not be the best looking set up but it will take care of the issue and the cars handling wont be affected in a negative manner.

Replacing the front bumper will effect high speed stability and may also have adverse effects on the cooling system.

 

fabryce , if you raise the car over an inch, wouldn't it affect handling in a negative way ? such as body roll ? just curious
i thought that was the whole point of lowering a car

 

Yes you lower a car to improve handling.

Porsche does have a tarmac set up meaning there is a raised ride hieght set up for the car that wont effect that handling negatively. His whole point was to avoid ripping the bumper off.

 

I guess you could notch it, ala C4S lips.

 

I'd do what Fabryce is saying. Even if it does affect the handling (higher center of gravity), it would be so negligable that it wouldn't be noticable for street use which is where I'm assuming he uses the car.

 

Car is used daily in the city and every other weekend at the canyons. Clearance is only a problem in the city with intersections. He thought of the 997S bumper only because of the shorter overhang and higher approach angle. He paid a small fortune for the car (165k euros) and he won't be single for long so he drives it as much as he can.

We are going to the dealer tomorrow to see how the bumper fits and if there are any cooling issues and I will come back to report

 

If the GT3 bumper cover fits on the 997S then I would assume that the 997S would fit on the GT3. Porsche/aftermarket people do not reccomend fitting a GT3 bumper on a car unless you also add a wing/spoiler to the back. Would this also hold true to this situation and the GT3 rear spolier would also need to be removed to balance the car?
