New roof for the GT3 / RS

Interesting info guys for GT3/RS owners. Some of you may know but I recently spoke with Simon at Evosport and we discussed his plans of developing a carbon fiber roof for our cars. To me this is outstanding news because I HATE that piece of sh_t sun roof. Extra weight in the worst possible location for the GT3's. Nothing was said about weight savings. This in the planning stage but he did tell me that there's been good interest shown to consider following through with the idea. On light colored cars the CF would be a knockout look needless to say about weight savings and added head room. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. GT3Ranger out. A brother in motorsports passion.

Can't you just remove the sunroof motor and associated drive parts and get your weight savings for allot less money.
I would think there must be a way to lock the sunrroof in the closed position.
You wouldn't gain any headroom but it seems like a much simpler solution if you don't want the sunroof.

GTS-R is infamous around these parts
While the CF roof certainly is a good idea from a weight advantage, it would certainly hurt the resale of the car.

Mods always do affect a vehicle's resale but I try to do things for me and not the future buyer, even if they don't admit the value of the mods. Inwardly they are happy about the mod but outwardly they'll say would prefer stock. I do not see parting with the GT3. In 42 years of driving I do not remember feeling this way about a car, especially multiple previous Porsches. This one is special and its a keeper.

How much additional weight does the sunroof add?

I would never cut and weld roof or other important body parts on any decent car...

I replaced the roof in my 997 GT3 with an OEM non sunroof panel. It was not a big job and I am very happy with the results.

Bonding in a CF panel on the roof could cause some serious problems with body rigidity, and make it prone to crack at the seams. Besides the loss of torsional rigidity you will also have very little roof impact protection.

We have carbon replacement roof panels available for the 997GT3/ RS cars.

These have been developed for racing and are a weight savings although not a signifigant saving for the non-sunroof cars.
There is about 5 lbs of difference between the steel roof panel and a carbon roof panel.

It may not be worth it for the RS owners.

Install is a bit of work, not to mention the finishing work that needs to be done on the interior.

I couldn't agree more! Here's a concept, go on a diet and lose 5 lbs, save the money that you would have invested in the CF panel and use it to attend a quality racing school.....bet you'll improve your lap times better than if you went with the CF roof.

Now if its just the look you are after, then by all means go with the CF.
