The best place/price to buy a Nokia 8801 is at Compusa for $599 unlocked with no contracts. You can sign up for their CompUSA card and get it for $540 basically. That's what I did.

you can find one on ebay for 640... which is the lowest price i've found so far w/o contracts...

The deal at compusa is much better. The black version is 8800 which came from Russia.
N80's price have been dropping rapidly from about 1200 at the beginning of release to about mid 700s now if you look hard enough. Give it about 2-3weeks, it should be in the 600s. When Nokia officially releases it in the US, the retail will be in the low 600s, so expect price to drop a lil more.
