2012 C & C - Great Falls, VA - Katie's
Agreed...it's getting silly with all these "this one is really really special" editions on the Lambos. But it seems to be de rigueur for VAG. Look at all the special models for the Veyron. It really smacks of golden calf type of stuff.
It reminds me of the old man syndrome where they think everything rare is special. Like a lot of harley guys I know think that every anniversary model or special edition is supposed to be a big deal (well, really they only think that when THEY own it), just because...."they only made 100 of these in this color." As in...."you know they only made 57 1998 Honda Accords sedans in blue with tan leather interior with sunroof with a manual shifter with the optional trunk net."
My theory as to why they do that is because there are a lot of buyers out there who want something different than your standard Gallardo. So they take it to a shop, throw tens of thousands of dollars into it, lose the warranty, and may or may not have the Lamborghini factory quality to it.
If Lamborghini comes out with a few different models, it might capture a part of that market, plus for the buyer it relieves them of the time/money/hassle of modding their car and allows them to keep the warranty, build quality, etc.
DUDE?!?! Your dream car too?

But VW has done better with stewardship of luxury brands than anyone else out of major mfg.s so presumably/hopefully they'll figure it out..... but I dont see the Aventador platform - as hi tech and hi performance as it is - carrying them as far or as long as either the Diablo or Murci one did, not in these days and times. But again.... it is VW group, they own the whole market ex Ferrari/Fiat and super smalls like McLaren, Pagani, Koenigsegg etc., they will make it work even if it means just throw more money at it.
And actually from what I know the pre Aventador chassis dates back to Countach (I heard the LP 670 was supposed to be "LP 710" (or something close to that) but chassis was splitting apart under testing so they went as far as they could go), so that Aventador tub probably has countless / decades' worth iterations and reincarnations in it... hopefully. I give the first blush Aventador a 7 out of 10.... but that's me and I'm just me and NOT at thais date and time a qualified buyer so who cares LOL.
LOL!!!! You don't agree!!!??? As an SE owner I would have thought that you would be more annoyed than anyone that lambo released like 5 more special editions into the market. No? The original SE = awesome. the nera = slightly less awesome. the superG = awesome......they lost me after that.
"and it burns the people who bought in good faith i.e. Balbonis."
Although I'm sure that series will be a collector's item due to its limited run, I'd like to think people bought the Balboni edition because they wanted RWD instead of AWD. It's the main point of the car.

I know a Ferrari guy..... big time Ferrari guy, owns multiple dealerships, worked for Ferrari... etc. etc. drove the Balboni on a race track and said "probably the best street - sports car (he) had ever driven"
Now that was before 458s started rolling off the boat but still.I do love them.... give me a "basic" 560 or Balboni all day long. Car is off the hook, driving or just sitting curb-side looking at it. I don't know what it is, if I did I'd prob. be some big auto exec., they just cant sell them like one would think they should. MOST, not all but most, hard core Ferrari guys i know would rather drive a Kia than a Lambo. Seriously. I guess that multi hundred-million $ F1 budget does something.
I don't know. In some ways the whole big mfg. auto biz is becoming so homogenized. I mean VW Grp. building a VW, Porsche, Audi and Bentley SUV all on the same chassis / platform... really??!! Economies of scale at some point rule business I suppose... but the art and the classic true-artisan brand names associated with it i think will over time get leveraged and cannibalized to a point where a lot of them will be of little value.
Time marches on... what can you do??

Rain was predicted for this morning, but the lot was dry when I got there at 6:30AM, and the rain held off until about 10:00AM. Turnout was not as big as last week, but still respectable. As always, there's something for just about everybody - exotics, antiques, muscle - you name it.
