Drove an Audi R8 V8 followed immediately by a 2012 GTR

Quick thoughts:

The R8 is the better overall car. It seems more connected, more refined, and honestly, it looks exotic and its still fast. The GTR is brutally fast. I've never driven a car that fast. Its shocking and in a straight line. Handling seems slightly disconnected. Its kind of like riding a rocket.

I could live with either car. However, the R8 does it for me - I'm biased, and I admit it. I've always been an Audi guy. But the R8 is by far a more livable car and still carries that exotic car feeling thats not easy to come by. Will the GTR kill me in a drag race... yes. But its rare that you'd come up to one anyways. So I enjoy the overall feeling of the car much more. Plus there's something awesome about hearing the engine behind you. Plus that manual gate shifter and the sound of the engine (from outside at least) is far more melodious and inspiring.

The GTR is stupidly fun. It shouldn't be allowed to ever drop into a teenagers hands. This car makes no damn sense when you drive it. The acceleration is stupendous when the turbos kick in. The handling is great, but feels disconnected. Like I'm wearing a pair of gloves a size to big. The interior is not even close to the R8. Not close. The navi and functions, though, are better than the Audi. The exhaust sounds overly mechanical, as does the engine. I felt like I was listening to a factory machine and not an incredibly potent engine.

I think you can't go wrong either way. Both cars offer something for their owners. The GTR is ridiculous if all you care about is going fast - nothing else will match it for that price. But I care about the overall car, and the R8 (even the V8 version) does it for me. I'm not the type of person to track the cars, so for me the V8 R8 is the sweet spot at that price range.

I agree with your choice. Indeed, the GTR is an amazing performer, but that is where it ends for me. I personally went with a 997.1 Turbo but the R8 is a solid performer with exotic looks and a wonderful interior. I actually chose my e92 m3 over the GTR in 2008 when I cross shopped them both.

Yeah... I have to say having the GTR for a day is incredible. I love this car... and it will take anything on the road, but I'm still all for the livability of the R8. 997.1 turbo is a beast as well, it would have been nice to drive it to compare as well.

The R8 is a wonderful car, beautifully balanced. If I could find one in the dual clutch setup V10 with every available option, it might replace my GT-R.

That time is coming... Unfortunately, so is the price tag.

If it's the gated shifter you're after, there is, quite literally, no comparing the two.

I've driven a GT-R and I've only riden in an R8. They are both amazing machines, it all comes down to what you want, like, and prefer. The R8 I rode in is a GT V10, 1 of 333 built. Its currently undergoing a Stasis S/C and exhaust install. Can't wait for the next ride! LOL.

I have yet to drive a V10 R8. I have a GT-R myself and do not feel to be disconnected handling wise at all. The V8 version doesn't have enough engine.

The only disconnect feeling I get is when i stomp on the pedal and my head feels like it is disconnecting from my neck from the acceleration.

R8 would have to be V10 or V8 TT imo...the V8 is a bit of a dog on it's own.

LOL

I wish I knew someone in NJ with a GTR. I want to go for a ride in one so bad and feel how fast it is especially from a stop. I cant imagine hoe crazy it feels. If you want to drive to NJ from Seattle let me know

Yeah, V8 is a dog, and values are plummeting now on all R8's.
