The New Skyline GTR Spotted in NM...

Heres the latest info on the car:
http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=4650

"Power will come from a 3.7-liter version of Nissan's VQ powerplant. A pair of turbochargers will help it produce about 450 bhp and 360 lb.-ft. of torque. Because longtime fans of the GT-R are accustomed to more output via aftermarket tuning, Nissan has seemingly left some room on the table for buyers wanting to increase the power of their GT-Rs."
-Road and track article

I like it, I am just not sure that it looks like a $70,000 car. It will be interesting to see the potential of that car.

It had been spotted around the nissan headquaters with a 911 behind it as they are using that car as the benchmark against performance.

I had read in car and driver, i think, that its probably going to take a few porsche turbo drivers away due to its straight up performance numbers and lower price than the 997 turbo.

I was just wondering what the actual porsche guys think of it.

Now wait a minute....My ZO6 buddies told me that for 70K all you can get is an engine without an interior???

Are you sure the interior comes with the car for 70K???

I saw a Skyline on hwy 101 yesterday first time I have have seen one and I did like the looks of this car. And with what C&D is saying about the output I am sure this will pull one or two buyers away from the Porsche but not many. People buy Porsche because it is a "Porsche" period.

I am pretty sure that the $70k price is the full price. There is no way they get get the car in the upper $80's and still have a market for it.

It is still just a really fast nissan, and if the price is too close to that of a 911 it would hurt them.

When you look at the fact that this is going to be a true factory produced car, not a hand built car like the NSX was, that it will most likely end up sharing platform with other nissan/inifitis it should be very simple for them to make it at that price.

The nsx was sold in the 90's and that car was a hand assembled car, so the 70's for a factory produced import should not be hard.

Yeah, The article was saying that it would probably pull a few of the 911 drivers, but they would most likely be back to the p-car after the novelty wears off.

All my info points to this being the pre-production/prototype car. There are some distinctions between what you see in the picture and the final car, almost all for the better though nothing drastic.

I cannot reveal my source and therefore can't give detail on the extensive materials I have beside me (which could be traced back to this person). So, take this info as you will

Here's the basics:

- The large vertical vent/opening behind the front fender has been closed off, with the rear of the fender flare being lightly reshaped to blend back into the body (without any gap). There will be a small vent/emblem right behind the front fender (placement would be ala the M3 - but the piece itself looks smaller & different).

- The side glass/roofline: The downward sloping line that borders the top of the windows (as you visually move from front to rear) has been reworked and smoothed out. It is now a gentle, smooth slope. The kink at the rear has thankfully been removed.

Instead of the top line sloping all the way down to the bottom line of the glass, it ends several inches above, and it is then met by a new line that slopes up and back from the bottom. Probably more easily described with a pic than with words. Look at the rear lines of the Prius glass for an example of what I'm trying to describe:

http://www.toyota.com/prius/index.ht...TN_PRIUS_INDEX

- That long body line protrusion on the lower part of the door (that is an extension of the front fender) is gone. The door is totally smooth now. As mentioned the front fender has been reworked and now tucks back into the body before ever reaching the door. The front fender is now more like a fender arch & flare & no longer a piece of a longer body line.

- The hood/scoop arrangement is changed to a single cowl induction scoop, centered, low profile, and back closer to the front windshield.

- The side mirrors are no longer tacked on below the window line. They are much smaller, and integrated into the bottom front corner of the window, where currently you see a triangular area of black plastic on this pre-production car.

- The front nose has been altered vs. the prototype images that are on the web, cleaning it up a little but not substantially. Generally an improvement but it could be a lot better IMHO.

Now, to throw in a little speculation that is based on some additional info I've seen but simply cannot share... My guess is that the car comes with a little less of a horsepower rating than folks are guessing.. But in turn is also going to be cheaper than expected (as Jaded996 & HemiCuda1313 are guessing). As Jaded mentioned, this is a mass-produced car on a shared platform, not a handbuilt exotic.

And to add to that, Nissan is about making money. The way to do that is with volume, not by making a niche car. If the GTR is going to go the distance, it needs to make sense for people to want to buy 3-4 years after it's introduced -- long after the initial fanatics that would be willing to pay big $$ for a GTR have bought their car, leaving the rest of us who wouldn't see a Nissan as in the same class as a Porsche (though I have no doubt the GTR will do just fine as far as performance goes).

They are both AWD, but more likely than not the GTR's new ATTESSA AWD system will be better than anything outfitted in the R8. We all know how crazy the Japanese gets with their electronic torque/power/whatever control systems . . .

Powerplants are also different. V10 vs. V6 Twin Turbo . . . . they should behave quite differently.

It's like comparing apples to oranges IMO. Personally, I'm a GTR fanboy and would take it over the R8 anyday. But hey, if someone wants to buy me a R8 I'd take one as well.

Really, those that would consider a Pcar at $70K would not consider the GTR. OTOH, those that are looking at a GTR for performance would choose the GTR over the Pcar even if they were the same price.

Let's look at it this way...
The GTR, with the usual suspected mods of a Nissan turbo...Nissan's flagship car, will probably be able to hit over 500hp in comfort. Let's just say it costs, at most, $20K for those mods. So we're looking at less than $100K for a very sophisticated AWD system with over 500 hp...we're talking 997 performance here. Doubt me? Check the Nurburgring times for the last Skyline's times.

Should that really come to market, there's going to be quite a few ruffled feathers for many car makers.

i doubt it. i'm sure the tt supra didn't slow porsche sales down and they're cheaply built to riddiculous HP levels. two different types of consumers. there's a lot of people that don't want to walk past the sentras and altimas to get to the showroom not to mention the level of customer service is certainly better at a pcar dealership (for the most part) than at a nissan dealer. most of us will never make it to the "ring" anyway
