I remember reading that someone bought a used "E55" from a dealer on the net and had it shipped, only to pop the hood and see an E350 V6 upon receipt. The dealer said that they never sold it as an AMG and it was priced as an E350. The guy thought he was getting a good deal and never bothered to perform even basic due diligence, like, oh I don't know, checking the VIN.
Most likely this person knows the badge is fake, or even worse some dealers put it on if the car has the "M-package" to make it more appealing, and the buyer is none the wiser that they are getting laughed at on car forums (thinking the badge is a factory option). I'll never really understand fake badges though, why turn a perfectly respectable 5-series into a joke when the only type of people you are trying to impress probably know the difference.

I saw that same car at a Shell station somewhere, I forget the location but unfortunately I can't forget that car!
When people ask me what my cars cost, I don't take offense or avoid answering. They usually aren't asking in the context of me personally, but instead want to understand how the value translates to what they are seeing visually, no different than asking me how fast it is. It's just another data point so I answer the question just as I would any other data point.
Keep in mind some people are looking at these cars for the first time and it would be like walking into a museum and not knowing the difference between the priceless works of art from the mass produced prints. They are merely looking for context.
Sometimes people ask about financing because they are seriously trying to sort out at what point in their life they may be able to afford their dream car. I don't believe in the whole, "if you have to ask..." line because I think people are often looking for a roadmap to their goals and I do what I can to put their questions in the context that's helpful.
I've never been asked what I make or what I'm worth and I think there is a clear difference in the question, so I don't mind the other stuff in the context of cars.

I'm impressed! Gracious, patient answer. What a gentleman.
