Rotor Wear on Full Size Range Rover?
Rotor Wear on Full Size Range Rover?
Any comments helpful...
Bought an '06 Full Size RR SC last July. Had 28K miles on it at that time. Asked dealer how much wear left on the rotors. Told (and I have it in email) 50% left, should be good for another 20-30K miles.
Was in for service at the end of September. Told about the same (20-25K).
Had it in this week. I've put less than 7K miles on it since purchase and less than 4K miles since the September services, and I'm now told I need new rotors.
This seems like a VERY atypical wear rate. I drive mainly highway miles. No stop and go. Mountains in CO, mainly, but pretty much main route (I70). I accept that the driver's "style" may affect wear rate. But, I'm VERY sympathetic to my equipment. Former GrandAm driver, so I know what I'm doing.
Anyone else have any wear patterns even close? Essentially, they're saying 15K +/- for per rotor. If so, what conditions?
Thanks,
CW

Dealer said the San Fran mommies eat brakes every 8K lol! My first set lasted 17K, then I switched to slotted vented rotors and ceramic pads. No more brake dust, and I have a ton of life left (currently at 51K miles). Only downside is increased pedal effort until pads heat up, but it is a must do for all RR's IMHO.
I did have the replacement rotors cryo'd, which will be interesting to see how much mileage I get out of them.
DF, I'm surprised that the slotted and vented rotors wear at a much slower rate. Normally, they'd wear faster than the solid rotors. At least on the race cars they do. Interesting and counter-intuitive. Which brand of rotors and pads, if you don't mind my asking?

Pads are ceramic so they aren't cutting the rotor like the stock semi-metallic. The pads were greenstuff if I remember correctly. Rotors... will have to think on that one or look through the old bills.
I had the same problem, mine lasted about 8 or 9k miles but then again that was with very spirited driving and of course 24 inch wheels! You know I have to feel out the BMW chassis underneath a bit here and there!
I was going to do ceramics, which made a huge difference on my Corvette. But a local brake shop was running a life time special, he tried to back out of it when I pulled in with a Range Rover ( notorious for eating rotors and front brakes) with 24 inch chrome wheels.

So yeah I think, I have got my moneys worth since I am on my 3rd brake job.
Oh and if your unlucky like me, your rear will need replacing too or in not too long!

I was quoted over a $1,000 dollars for the front and $900 or so for the rears by the dealer.
I own two range rovers. Had both since new. One an HSE and one Supercharged. They eat pads and rotors VERY fast. Supercharged needed new ones at 12k!!! Im still on my second set at 27k miles.
The HSE needed new at 14k new at 30k and im still fine at 45k.

On my wife's Sport she drove about 55K before the brake pad warning light came on(2 weeks ago) and I will take it in tomorrow to see what needs to be done. I know the Sports are a little smaller/different but so far brake rotor/pad life has not been that bad. I did not know Rovers were so hard on brakes!
Germeezy when you say lifetime brakes what does that mean? Will they replace the pads/rotors for free for the life of the car?????
