Winter driving dilemma (stock summer tires)...need your advice

I need make a 1000 km (600 mile) trip from Ontario to Pennsylvania with the Panamera 4. I've ordered my Panny's winter tires (Pirelli) in Pennsylvannia.

My question: Will the four wheel drive on the Panamera 4 and the summer tire (continental contisport contact 3?) make it Pennsylvania in and around Dec 17/18?

I'm having the winter tires installed there.

Anyone have experience with this sort of thing? has anyone driven their Panamera with stock tires? I only need one trip.

Anything except snow tires will mean certain chaos. The stock tires, as most all performance tires, are useless in snow. It will take you about 500yds to stop from 45mph. Get snows on asap.

I understand that, and I have run snow tires on all my vehicles for a long time.

However I need to make a 600 mile trip to get to my snow tires in Pennsylvania.

Just this one trip, after that the snows are on in Pennsylvania.

Any experience with the stock Panny tires in 30 F weather?

I've been driving mine in Michigan in the cold and it's fine. If there is a chance of snow I drive the jeep.

If it doesn't snow you'll be fine.

Hmm ok...this is what I wanted to know. I'll drive very very cautiously obviously leaving huge gaps for braking distance...the usual stuff. And the weather will get warmer from Ontario to Pennsylvania.

Just gotta do 600 miles

Look, I live in the Eastern part of Virginia and here Winters get cold, although we rarely see snow (well... maybe two-three times each season). I drive a 966TT with summer tires all year long - and put 25000 miles on the thing every twelve months.

Sure summer tires get a bit squirrelly below 40F if you push them, but for normal driving they are perfectly fine. In fact I'll venture to say that even light snow is OK, provided that you make the necessary allowance for slippery conditions. Personally, I have driven the TT in absolutely all conditions on summer tires and if anything doing so hones and helps perfect one' s driving abilities.

To ask the obvious - it seems that you have enough time to purchase winter tires in Ontario. If you are truly concerned why did you order them in PA?

Because tires here are 2x the price they are in the US.

We live in a rip-off system here. Canadian cars are 20% more expensive all-round, and THEN our taxes are higher on the car itself. The price I paid for a Panny 4, I would've had a 4S in the USA. Ditto the 335i -- it costs as much as an M3 does in the states.

Anyways, we ended up spending 2000 dollars at the dealer for them to install the Pirelli winter tires.

Thats double the cost. So I guess I'll just keep the tires in Philly when I go down -- safety comes before 1 K. Still annoyed -- the only way to remedy this is to move to the US! (Hopefully I can do a fellowship in California!)

If you compare to the rest of the world, we are already paying a really good price for our Porsche here in Canada (Although not as good as the US fellows). My P4S would have cost double of what I paid in Asia and other part of the world. The tax system here is different but we are also getting great social benefits and most of all a great place to live in. I am a proud Canadian and I dont mind supporting the economy of my country by contributing some tax.

Anyway, snow tires are a must for driving in the snow and safe trip down to Penn.

Cheers,

I understand, and agree with you but I don't do second best. I don't like it. Tax system depends on your income range: in the 500 - 1 million + range, there are a lot of services that one can buy out of pocket that government needn't provide.

The US is a great country if you're in the upper middle bracket -- not so great if you're in the middle or below.

I agree. The government does take a lot of tax from the upper middle income group. I think most countries would be good if you are in the upper middle class though, since you can afford to live in the good part of the city/country.
I am biased because BC is just a beautiful place to live in. I dont know about the east coast. But some places in the US are nice and I travel there all the time! I cant argue with that. Enjoy your P4 in good health and all the best!!

Thanks. I agree that Vancouver is probably the nicest city in Canada -- most culture/activities as well. Wonderful place!

Here in Ontario, Toronto is just a big mass of houses and people. Ottawa is cold and full of bureaucrats :|

My .02 cents...I live in Western PA and made the trip from Pittsburgh to Toronto to Ottawa a couple of months ago...That's a lot of road to cover...I guess if you stay behind the tractor trailers and take it "slow" you could probably make it...gotta way the risk versus the benefits...best wishes
