Question Panamera S suspension & PDK

I would like to get some inputs from other PS owners on the car suspension. I find the car very bouncy when going over speed bumps in comfort mode. The rear tires make screeching sound easily on light acceleration (I have 21" wheels, 295 on the rear, Michelin Pilot Sport S). When I take a tight S turn around 35-40 miles/h (in Sport mode), you can hear the tire squeaking noise. Coming from a '09 911, it is a completely different feel during acceleration. On my 911, I can hardly burn my tires unless I rev it up to 3500 RPM on take off. 911's grip on the road is just amazing. You just don't know you are traveling at 60 mph around those S turns (feels like 30-40 mph). I guess the Panny is more a luxury sedan rather than a true sport car. Am I right? If I compare the Panny to a BMW 550i (with Sport Package), the Panny's suspension seems softer than the 550i. I had a 550i and never had any squeaking noise coming from the tires during acceleration (the HP & torque are roughly the same as the Panny)

Second question is how to achieve optimal acceleration in PDK manual shifting. I tried to manual shift using the peddle shifter at 6500 RPM (just under redline) and the computer always cut off my acceleration while shifting from 1-2 or 2-3. If I shift at 6000 RPM, it seems like I am shifting too early. Am I supposed to leave it in AUTO and let PDK do all the work during acceleration? Can I really drive a PDK car as if it were manual?

thanks in advance.

YOU can drive the pdk as manual with the paddles, but its useless. The pdk for all intents and purposes is an auto. Let it shift, its the fastest. In my opinnion the manual thing with two clutches is more of a marketing thing.

In your 911 the engine was on top of the rear wheels adding grip. If I understood correctly your car has rwd. I cant comment vs 550i, because with my 20inch wheels and air suspension, the car is softer in comfort, but very hard in sport plus, but bimmer shouldnt be even close, Panny is the sportscar.

Compared to my 997tt, the traction is slightly worse in Panny although both have awd, its the weight. Wheels work hard for the car to accelerate. You feel this in slow parking, you hear the individual tires slipping. Also its 800nm vs 680nm...

Thanks Kip, this is very helpful. Now I know, not to spend my time learning how to master manual shifting using PDK. As much as I like the double clutch during downshift in PDK, I think I enjoy the manual transmission a lot more. It is just more engaging. I know manual is not as fast as PDK but I rather have more control over the car.

Next car will be back to a 911. I will wait for the new 911 to work out its early production issues then jump back onto one.

thanks again.

This tire squeaking coul be air pressure. What are you running? I've pulled 1.1 g's in my GTS without any tire noise. I also have PDCC, and the GTS suspension, but your tires shouldn't be making that kind of noise at reasonable driving speeds. I'd double check the tire pressure.

Factory comes with 45 psi on all 4 tires (21" wheels). I think that's the factory recommended tire pressure. Maybe the tires are still new. I only have 1100 miles on them. don't know if it matters or not.

thanks

It shouldn't matter. I've now been through new Pirellis and new Michelins and they don't make any noise under cornering. Again, I'm not sure how much the PDCC makes a difference. If you're running 45 psi, it could be alignment. Does the car feel like it's handling well?

Umwolverine, Zhecks has RWD and you have AWD, there is a huge difference in traction. Im pretty sure that is the problem.

Yes, big difference. If the noise is your rear wheels breaking traction under acelleration, then that's probably it.

Funny you use the word "bouncy"; that is the same exact word I use to describe comfort mode. I leave the suspension in sport plus 99% of the time. It's interesting though, as an experiment I kept it on comfort for the last few days...very quickly I got used to it and no longer noticed the bounciness.

As to manual shifting, I had a similar experience. I was hoping this would be similar to driving a normal manual, but I just couldn't get used to it. Actually, I didn't even care that much...I run Sport mostly, sometimes Sport Plus and override occasionally with the toggle shifters...that way you get the best of both worlds.

Unlike just about all of the rest of the world, I love the toggle shifters!
