So I had my winter wheels/tires mounted today for my second winter in my 4S. My summer tires. (Pirelli Pzero) are SHOT! My car is at about 17k miles, probably about 5k of that was on winter tires. So I got 12k miles. I've had Pirellis on my last two cars, got much better mileage than this! I drive pretty sane, have tried launch control maybe ten times (ain't gonna do that again!). Did some research,the non-symmetric tires that can't be rotated are part of the problem. Still, this seems bad!

So I was gonna try the Michelin PS2s. Reading on Tire Rack and the Michelin website, I keep getting drawn to the Michelin Super Sports. They are cheaper, have a longer warranty, and are rated either the same or better in every category. I just don't get why they are not standard Porsche equipment, and after reading that why anyone would get the OEM tires. Any input would be most appreciated.

I don't know much about tires (I have the Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my 2002 e39 M5), but I believe the Super Sports are not "N" rated (yet?). That's why they aren't "recommended" by Porsche?

Although I thought I read somewhere that Panameras were starting to come with some variant of the Pilot???

 

What I know about the PZeros is based on experiences with them on my BMW 135i convertible...good summer tires, but not the best treadwear. I went through a set after only about 6K miles. Had I not sold the 135i, I was preparing to switch to the TOYOs for that car. As for Michelin tires, I really like them. I had the 20" Pilot Super Sports on my M6 convertible. These tires are soft though, so you might experience the same type of "rapid" treadwear depending on your driving style...I went through 2 complete sets of these tires in about 22K miles. The other thing to factor, I think, is the affect that all-wheel-drive might have on these high performance tires as compared to rear-wheel-drive cars. It seems logical to me that these tires may wear faster under AWD systems.

 

There are several German test that were done with the Super sports N rated tire. Just dont get why they are not available yet...
