Guys thought I would start a new thread with some alternative, less expensive brake parts. There's no need to be spending $4000 for OEM brakes when aftermarket brake components are just as good.

OEM rotors are $660 each
OEM pads are $360 front set

Centric rotors... $130 each

These are all brands I have seen on the track/street before. Made in America and trustworthy. No reason at all to go with overpriced OEM parts.

If you have a car jack, jack stands, and some basic tools. These parts can be installed within an hour in your own garage. Or you can go to a trustworthy local shop and have these installed for under $300.

The OEM two-piece rotors on the PTT are brutally expensive.

 

There's a tire rack rep on this forum. Would be nice to get his word.

Cast iron rotors made in America by reputable companies. These rotors are used by people who track their cars since they are inexpensive to replace and if you track your car, you're replacing them often.

 

OE carbon rotors definitely some coin.

 

Treated right they are essentially lifetime parts though.

 

If they are lifetime parts why are people reporting brake jobs that need pads and rotors replaced?.. I'm inclined to go the OR route better safe than sorry.. But im curious about the products in the OP..

 

They're talking about ceramic rotors which are a $20k option on our cars. It's the cars with the yellow calipers. Those don't wear down like iron rotors but they do chip easily so they have to be handled with care when doing work around them. Pads on either rotor have to be replaced when worn down but they're not that expensive to replace.

 

Carbon ceramic rotors, not iron.

Better as far as what? Rust resistance? noise? longevity? In my years of experience, quality aftermarket rotors suits just fine. (Zimmerman, BOSCH, WBR, etc...) I especially like zinc coated rotors (non-carbon ceramic).

 

I was just on tire rack and suncoast looking at front rotors. Has anyone tried these front rotors on tire rack? was given a price of ~3400 for replacing front rotors, brake pads, and associated parts. Got me thinking what other options are out there for front brakes. Seems like the parts from suncoast are about ~1600 for rotors and pads and the like.

 

The OEM rotor is 2 piece so it probably weighs a little less than the 1 piece iron rotors. The aftermarket rotors are zinc coated which means the hubs will never rust and will look nice and shiny. Like I said, many people who abuse their cars will go with aftermarket rotors and not worry about any ill effects. Give tirerack a call and ask them about the rotors they sell for the panamera, they will tell you the same thing
